5 Days Later and Gas Pain in Shoulder

It has been 5 days since my procedure and I still have horrible gas pain in my right shoulder that hurts everytime I take a deep breath. I also feel like my upper abdomen is going to pop, it's so tight! I took some Anti-gas med. last night but this did not help. Does anyone know of any good tips or tricks to get rid of this pain?

Re: 5 Days Later and Gas Pain in Shoulder

My DH gave me a fabulous massage before I went to sleep the night I got out of the hospital. I didn't have any gas pains (in my shoulders) after that . . .

As far as the abdominal gas, I found that the only thing that really works for that is walking, walking and more walking. Even if it is only around your house or to the end of the driveway.

Re: 5 Days Later and Gas Pain in Shoulder

Hi Brandy - that shoulder pain is just the worst, isn't it! I used a heating pad as a last resort and it seemed to help. I munched down chewable Gas-X several times a day. I avoided gassy foods. My nurse had said to think about it like "gas rises".....so even though it is in our body it is still trying to get "up". As such, I found I needed to sleep upright when I had that pain...if I tried to lay down it got worse, but that might have just been me. And my nurse also said to try to lay on whichever side is hurting the worst, and that the gas would essentially move away/up from there. I don't know that I described that very well, I hope it makes some sense.

And I hope you get relief soon!

Do you think that the Gas-X worked? I'm thinking about putting a heating pad on my shoulder too.

Re: 5 Days Later and Gas Pain in Shoulder

Hi Brandy - yes, I really did feel relief from the Gas-X - not complete relief at all, but some is better than nothing. Several times I even burped a bunch right after chewing one of the tablets, and eventually I started passing gas the other way too... I was chewing an extra strength tablet every couple of hours at the worst of it. I don't believe it helped my shoulder pain, but definitely the abdominal gas/pressure/pain.

Best of luck.

Re: 5 Days Later and Gas Pain in Shoulder

I was getting the bad shoulder pain as well and didn't realize initially that it was gas related (I broke the shoulder in the past and it aches at times)...but after finally getting some relief from all the gas (with lots of walking and Gas-X chewables) I noticed that the shoulder pain has lessened a lot. I've tried laying on my left side as my sisterinlaw who's a nurse said that would help me out and it does seem to give me relief from the gas but I find it hard to take with my incision (hurts like heck).

Re: 5 Days Later and Gas Pain in Shoulder

That pain in my shoulder was aweful. At 5 days post op I was still severely constipated, and I realized the gas pain was worse when I didn't have a BM. So I added GasX, flax seed and oranges to my diet, and alot of walking. Since I've been having regular BMs the gas and shoulder pain have almost totally gone away.
