Worried about weight gain
Good morning all
This site is wonderful and has allayed a lot of my fears and answered most of my questions, but I haven't been able to find an answer to this one:
I'm really really worried that I'm going to put on weight permanently after my TAH/BSO. I've always been obsessed with my weight and was not far off being anorexic in my early adult years (long story, won't cloud the issue by going in to details! ). I'm currently 'normal' weight but still feel I could do with losing a couple of kilos.
I know I'm going to put on some weight due to inactivity whilst healing (and I accept that although somewhat grudgingly!), but is it definite that I will never get back to my 'normal' weight? Even if I step up my sessions at the gym?
Thanks in advance for any responses
Lou

Re: Worried about weight gain
I think if you keep up with good eating habits and exercise you will be able to control your weight easily. I am only 17 days post op but so far I have lost weight even with the inactivity. I find I still have no appetite and have to force myself to eat anything. I've dropped 2 pants sizes already and that's with a swelly belly.
I wouldn't let it worry you....eat well and you will be fine.

Re: Worried about weight gain
Concentrate on healing first, and the rest will take care of itself. You will need good nutrition but gentle activity in the first few weeks, so don't be temped to rush anything. Like I've read so many times on this site, you have just one chance to heal!
The other can wait!

Re: Worried about weight gain
You will use up a lot of calories simply healing. Focus on eating protein, fruit, and vegetables. I have heard most people actually lose 20 pounds when they have a hysterectomy. I lost 70 when I was in the hospital last year 4 months for pancreatitis and that was with me mostly just laying in bed.

Re: Worried about weight gain
I had the same concerns as I too heard that most women gain weight after a hysterectomy. Despite my horrible swelly belly and what I refer to as my "muffin top" over my incision area, I lost ten pounds since my surgery and an holding steady at nine pounds less than what I weighed prior to surgery. I had a TAH on May 3rd. I have been eating properly, but of course with "some" sinful deserts here and there as people have brought them with meals to help me out while recovering.
First and foremost, you need to take care of yourself!! Eat properly and worry about the weight gain or loss once you recover.
Good luck to you!!

Re: Worried about weight gain
dont worry...i was thinking about this much too preop...i was going for a walk/jog daily before the surgery and i was worried about laying in bed for so long and gaining. i did have much swelling for at least a month, but my weight held steady on the scale.
i am now nine months post op and i have lost 10 lbs from what i weighed before the surgery. i feel wonderful and am very glad i had it done.
take care of yourself! i know it is hard in the midst of it, but it gets better and will be over before you know it!

Re: Worried about weight gain
I am six days out and I have already lost weight. To be honest, I don't have much of an appetite after the surgery. Even an Iced Mocha makes me feel really full (I think it is because my belly is so swollen). I think that most people do lose a few pounds right after, but as far as the months and years ahead, I guess I am unsure.

Re: Worried about weight gain
I'm worried about post-op weight gain too. I have spent the last year losing 30 lbs(the fall of 2009) and keeping it off. I work out 4-5 times a week currently and plan to start walking as soon as I'm awake and they'll let me out of bed. My concern is in the past I have had the habit of eating out of boredom and since I'm going to be stuck at home unable to do much I know boredom is coming. Good to hear I may not have much of an appetite. I'm going to make sure I have plenty of low calorie, healthy snacks around in case the urge to munch hits. Good luck to all.

Re: Worried about weight gain
I too have lost weight since surgery approx 12lbs thus far and its been 3 weeks, I surely am not exercising much lol and I havent been watching what I eat per say either, I'm eating what I am in the mood for as my bowels and GI system are still not in agreement with the surgery. I think I attribute alot of it to losing my icky uterus, I had adenomyosis so it was enlarged and cause alot of abdominal bloating. All I can say I hope (knock on wood) this weight loss isnt a fluke and I gain it back lol

Re: Worried about weight gain
The day of my surgery they weighed me in at 185lbs. The day after surgery I weighed in at 175lbs! I couldn't believe I'd lost 10 lbs in surgery alone. I do have the funky swelly belly too and my appetite is sketchy, but I've been walking as much as I could tolerate since the day after surgery. Don't worry about the weight gain. Healing will become your number one priority after it's over and the weight loss, if there is any, will be icing on the cake.
