Seroma, anyone?

12 days post TAH

Large seroma behind incision, draining into my right leg and out the incision. Driving self to dr for re-packing daily.

Does anyone know whether this can turn into lymphedema?
How long to heal?

Tks!

Re: Seroma, anyone?

Hi (((sandfin))) I'm sorry you are dealing with a seroma. How long does the doctor say it would take to drain? I had a couple of hematomas form after my last breast surgery, and those developed into seromas over time. They were not drained, and I was told it could take years but that eventually the fluid (which is blood serum) would be reabsorbed.

I have not heard of a seroma developing into lymphedema; the two fluids are a bit different in that lymph contains white blood cells and the serous fluid in a seroma does not.

Lymphedema is more common when lymph nodes are removed, which is not normally done with a TAH. Does your doctor say this is a concern for you?

I hope your seroma drains quickly and you're able to get on with your recovery soon.

s,
-Linda

Re: Seroma, anyone?

I have ended up with a second surgery to debride seroma and infection, and to insert a wound vac in place for 10 days.
