prolapse: repair or hysterectomy?

I have posted a message previously on the 'alternatives' board but I am desperately searching for illumination .. so forgive me if the content is duplicated.

I am 33, finished my family (3) & have a uterine prolapse that doesnt give me dire problems - just discomfort, tendency towards infections etc & annoyance. I have previously (june99) had repairs done but prolapsed again after about 18mths. My surgeon has suggested either TVH (his preferred option) or further repair. My surgery is scheduled for Nov7.

I would really like to hear from anyone who has had a hyst. after having repair work done. I am very conscious that I am lucky to not really suffer in the way so many of you do/did ..

I scar easily & I do have difficulty with adhesions from the initial reconstructive repair work. I have seen some mention of having adhesions cleaned up when they go back in .. has anyone had that done .. and if they did .. did it work??

I know I'm not a definite 'in-waiting' .. but I might be ..

thanks

prolapse: repair or hysterectomy?

I just had my surgery, so far so good. I had lots of endo and prolaspe happening, so I ended up with a vaginal hyster and lots of repair work. If you have the uterus out it will not fall no more...make sure you GET some bladder support, mine dropped out after the removal of the uterus, so now I am tacked and had a support wall built for the bladder.

Wishing you the best!

Thanks Spicefire! The bladder support is a great thing to suggest to my surgeon as I did have to have 'something' done to it before (was a bit ignorant first time round!). I am seeing him again Oct 24. It was great to hear from you so quickly ... be kind and gentle to yourself as you heal .. thank you. jacq.

Jacq,

You might want to get a second opinion from a Urogynecologist. These Dr.s specialize in problems such as yours. You can find out more about prolapse by going to the uterine prolapse information web site and can locate a Urogyn in your area there also.

Many best wishes to you!

prolapse: repair or hysterectomy?

Prolapse? I think I understand what this is all about. Parts falling out right? I too am worried about the bladder problems after hysterectomy. I already have bladder problems - will they get worse? I don't want a second surgery either. What can you ladies tell us...do we lose bladder control after hyster? Is there a procedure we can ask them to do while we're under?

Dear JudyAnn,

If you are experiencing any stress incontinence (leaking when you sneeze, etc.), now is the time to discuss it with your doc. Are you having your hyst for prolapse? Here is a good link for more info about it: http://pages.prodigy.com/prolapse.html/

If you're not already faithful about doing kegel exercises, start them TODAY. They are beneficial for good bladder control for ALL women.

Get 2 or 3 medical opinions; this is major surgery. Get smart about your symptoms and your options, and make the best choice for YOU.

Sending cyberhugs
