Anemia

Hi All~
Prior to my TAH I was diagnosed at being anemic....I have been on iron supps for a couple of years due to heavy periods. Of course ofter the hyster I am still on iron....anybody else have this issue? Were you on iron for short term? If so how long? I am taking liquid supps as the pill form just eats up my stomach. I would like to be rid of the whole thing.
Thanks

Re: Anemia

I was somewhat anemic at the time of surgery, but I am not restarting my iron pills until my digestion is back to normal....no sense adding insult to injury

Re: Anemia

I hear you on the digestion busybusybusy.
That really tore me up....I would vomit within 20 min of taking the pills that's why I am on the liquid...I take it when I eat in the am. Just tastes awful but doesn't wreak havoc on me.

Re: Anemia

I find that even though things are moving through with no problem, the experience of food moving through my intestines is quite uncomfortable, it just plain hurts to have much in there- bananas, ice cream, soup, tea, saltines, toast, that's about all I am willing to try!

Re: Anemia

I stuck to soft easy foods for quite some time. Are you on stool softeners too?

Re: Anemia

I too have been anemic for YEARS! I did not take my supplement when I returned home from surgery since the pain meds were constipating me and I also had gas.

Just last week I started back on my liquid iron supplement - my stomach appreciates the liquid a lot more than pills.

I will continue until my hemoglobin levels are where they should be.

Hbright, how do you take your liquid supplement? Do you dilute it with juice or water? And do you take a snack prior to? There are so many things you can't eat with the supplement I thought I would ask in case you have some suggestions.

Re: Anemia

couragous1~
I take mine in liquid form and just down it. I suck the measured amount through a syringe. I don't mix it with anything and just take in the toward the end of my breakfast (only take once a day) so that it has some food to cushion it.

Re: Anemia

WOW! You take it straight? I take the liquid too, but it tastes so awful I dilute it in juice or apple sauce. The instructions on mine say to dilute too. You're brave.

I asked about the food because I was told that certain foods are not to be taken with the supplement (bananas, eggs, whole grains, etc) and also that calcium interferes with absorption or iron. So I feel very limited in what I can eat before taking it.

Won't you be glad when the supplement is no longer necessary? I sure will!
