Worried about weight gain

Hi,

I'm scheduled for a TVH and bladder sling (to fix a cystocele, I don't know what that one's called) July 20th. I am so worried I'll gain weight while I am recovering. I'm already overweight although I do work out. I'm just worried that with NOT being able to work out, it's going to be bad news. I just wondered what the general consensus is - do women tend to gain post-hyst? I am keeping my ovaries, FWIW.

Thanks. I'm just nervous about all of it at this point.

Re: Worried about weight gain

My surgery is July 14. I have been told that post surgery most people actually loose weight. Due to pain meds, and just not feeling well, many loose their appetitie. Thats what I will hope for
Good luck- try not to worry. I hope that after my surgery I finally feel better and will be able to better concentrate on weight loss.
Have a speedy recovery!

Re: Worried about weight gain

I don't know about you, but when I woke up this morning and realized it was July 1, I had this horrible nervous feeling. It's like the countdown has begun. My month that has taken me ten years to get to, is finally here. I am literally shaking today. Keep telling myself.."everything is going to be ok".
Be blessed

Re: Worried about weight gain

Oh, I so know what you mean. I'm still in shock, having just found out yesterday I need it done and within six weeks. I looked at the calendar and had the same thought - 19 days. Yikes. But everything will be OK - we'll do fine. Hugs to you!

Re: Worried about weight gain

RedHotBeads; don't worry too much about gaining weight. I am six weeks post op and exactly at the same weight as I was before the surgery. I lost weight initially due to the pre op prep; I ate very lightly and stuck to liquid foods for a few days beforehand. I would suggest you drink a lot of water once you get home and eat healthy foods. I stayed away from soft drinks since they made me very gassy for several weeks afterward. Don't start snacking on cookies and chips while you're on the couch watching tv. I do have to warn you that the swelly belly can be discouraging. I cannot wear all of my clothes yet since the waistband is too tight. The button and zipper push right on my belly button or the scars around it and that hurts too much. I just started walking again and do daily exercises in the pool to help with my back ache. Walking was difficult for me until recently, it pulled too much in my lower abdomen and caused back pains. I am now at the six weeks mark and hope to start walking more and doing more strenuous exercises once I see the doctor in two weeks.

Re: Worried about weight gain

This may be a silly question, but does anyone know if you get swelly belly with a TVH?

Re: Worried about weight gain

You may still swell. Regardless of the method of extraction, the process is pretty much the same, they pull and poke and cut. I swell easily with injury, so I still have a lot of swelling. If you tend to not swell much with injuries, then you may not get much swelling. As far as the weight, I have been a ravenous little pig and I have gained a couple of pounds. I bought a Gazelle off of craigslist so I can do a little movement without straining myself too much. The stairs are still hard, and I burn easily, so the outside walks are limited to sundown time. I will use it today and report on how well I did. My thinking is that since I can control how far each movement goes, unlike my eliptical and my bike which may stretch me more than I want.

Re: Worried about weight gain

I had a daVinci procedure with just four small incisions in and around my belly button and still ended up with swelly belly. It's not that bad; about the same compared to my bloating during a heavy period. But ofcourse I've had it for six weeks now and it's not gone yet. The pain has been a lot less than I expected but other symptoms have taken its place. All in all it's been a positive experience and I am glad I will be done with those horrible periods!
