Anyone on just Progesterone?

I was prescribed "prometrium" and at first didn't understand it was considered a bio-identical, since my insurance covered the expense. I think some women, like me, might be confused about the insurance coverage for some bio-identical hormones. I was under the impression that insurance did not cover these types of hormones, but apparently they do.

Which brings me to the question, why are the other types not in the same category? does anyone know? for instance, why cover the prometrium capsule and not a gel? or maybe they do, is there a list any place that allows patients to know which ones are covered usually by insurance?

Can anyone tell me their experience on prometrium only? Is it customary for most doctors to take away estrogen patch or cream if they put a patient on just progesterone alone? This happened to me yesterday, and so far, I am feeling a lot of fatigue from my dosage last night. I called to ask if there is a 50 mg. as I got 100 mg. but have had no answer yet. Had hot flashes/chills in middle of night with this med.

Has anyone's hot flashes stopped after taking prometrium?

had hyst 10 yrs ago, kept ovaries

Re: Anyone on just Progesterone?

I have taken progesterone and prometrium before, and both make me tired, draggy and did not help my hot flashes. I found that estrogen is the only thing that has helped my hot flashes with ovaries or without.

Bio-identical patches, pills, gels, are covered by insurance. These are fixed dosages approved by the FDA. The hormones that you go to a doctor who works with a compounding pharmacy to make dosages specifically for a patient is usually not covered by insurance.

You will have to work with a doctor to find what works for you. My doctor went by my symptoms. He tried the estrogen and it helped my hot flashes. I cannot remember why at some point I was on prometrium, but it did not work for me.

If you want a natural progesterone gel or cream you can find some over the counter at health food stores, or you can go to a compounding pharmacy and ask for a doctor who will work with you and the pharmacy.

Hang in there
