Loose stools

Sorry for TMI, but I know most people complain of constipation post surgery and I am suffering from the opposite. It started one day after, and continues 3 days after. Should I be worried? I am off stool softeners today and ate solid food for lunch today hoping that will help!

Re: Loose stools

I did have that problem, probably due to antibiotics given during surgery. But it was only for a few days. If bananas and applesauce don't help, call your Dr and see if you need some testing for infection. But maybe by Mon it'll be better, if its just a reaction to meds it should be.

Re: Loose stools

It sounds like you don't need the stool softeners. Plus if you are eating a lot of fiber and fruit, prune juice and things to help you go, it may be because of that. I had loose stools for a few weeks and went more often that previously and I do remember other posts from others having the same issues. However, if you are having lots of cramps and you really don't feel well, it could be something else.

Re: Loose stools

what solid food are you eating? try rice -- does not produce gas, and is binding. also consider adding a probiotic to your diet to re-colonize a healthy balance of microbial flora in your GI system. get the best you can afford -- can find these in the refrigerated case at a healthfood store or, OTC at a drugstore or grocery store. L. acidophilus, especially.

talk to your doc asap if your diarrhea has a horrid (distinct) odor (could be a c. diff infection -- contagious and easily picked up in hospitals), or if you are going so much you are concerned about keeping hydrated. meanwhile keep on drinking water. bananas are always good to eat when suffering through the runs...

i hope you feel better soon!! keep us posted!

Re: Loose stools

Thanks!
It's slowing down today, only have gone once so far.
I've been having rice and bananas. Yesterday had a sandwich.
I am worried about infection. Hard to tell about the odor, the difference between just bad and horrid.
I have good probiotics here; that's very good advice!
