What are you doing about meals for afterward?

Did you/ will you prepare meals and freeze them? Or did someone cook for you? Reason I am asking is my husband is a truck driver and is gone till all hours of the night. My mother in law will be here (however her cooking abilities are less than desirable, never cooks enough for everyone in the house). I have started making a list of dishes i could make ahead of time and freeze just to have her pop them in the oven. Any ideas?

Re: What are you doing about meals for afterward?

Making some up in advance is a good idea.
Another thing is that when you first get home you'll be on a 'soft' diet until you have BM. I didn't have much of an appetite and just had yogurt, pudding, soup, etc. throughout the day and did not even have 'normal' meals for a few days.

Re: What are you doing about meals for afterward?

I have had 38 operations but never one that will keep me out of commission for this long. My appetite is usually sparse anyway given my size and i usually eat small amounts throughout the day. But I plan on having my husband make me some mashed potatoes those usually set well with me after my surgeries.

I didn't make up any meals but now I'm tired of sandwiches, so I should have made up a few things. Best thing I can tell you is make sure you have stuff you will eat in the house. I stocked up on applesauce and granola bars because as long as I eat *something*, then that's a step in the right direction. Good luck on your surgery! Hope everything goes smoothly and you recovery is uneventful!

I put in a supply of high fiber cereals, whole grain crackers, yogurt, soup, jello, lean cuisine and healthy choice dinners (looked for fiber and vegetables) and a variety of those skillet dinners that my hubby can fix in 10 minutes.

Re: What are you doing about meals for afterward?

I have a once a month freezer cooking cookbook and am using that to make approx. 30 meals for my family.

I have also made ahead some oat bran muffins and banana bread. So for dinner, dh or I can just heat it up, open a bag of salad and we're good to go.

I'm also making so many so that when I start back to work (part time) , I don't have to worry about cooking if I am wiped out by the time I get home.

My DH is a great cook so I didn't freeze meals ahead of time, but it's a wonderful idea and many members do! If you scroll down the forum page, you'll find the Sisteritaville: Hyster Sisters Cookbook. There are some awesome recipes and a section on Freezer Dishes to make ahead! Just wanted to share another idea!

Best wishes!

I am doing Soup in a Can for me, for the first few days, I really dont want to bend over a bowl, or try and lift the spoon without spilling in bed. I also got some Ice Pops. I am going to make a pound cake this weekend along with some Shredded BBq Chicken, Egg Salad, Tuna Salad (for sandwiches). My husband can cook everything else,or he and DD will go out. I also bought some Cranberry Juice, and some Gingerale. They always make me feel good. Then again so does Crackers, Creamcheese, and Peperoni!!! lol!

Re: What are you doing about meals for afterward?

I am stocking the freezer with preped homemade food and some easy one serving pizzas and chicken nuggests for the kiddo. My soon to be ex is currenly planning to come over at dinner time to help my 11 year old out. I am preparing hamburgers, baked ziti (light on the sauce...very light) homemade bread/biscuits, etc. Pantry is being stocked with granola bars, high fiber cereal, cup of soups, crackers, tuna fish and the fridge is loaded with diet pepsi, cranberry juice and will be loaded with salad greens my kiddo can throw in a bowl for me. Bottled water will be upstairs by the bed - easily accessible at all times.

Learned from my gallbladder removal that boxed meals had no appeal so I am aiming for homemade and frozen. And really hoping the kiddo is ready to microwave her life away... also stocking coldcuts for her . Have great support system so I may get lucky and get some leftovers from my family and friends!!!

Good Luck all!!
