Running after TAH BSO

Ok so I am new here b

I am scheduled to have TAH BSO for large ovarian mass and adenomyosis. When am I going to be able to run again. I enjoy running marathons and my cardio is great but I know all the rehab. from surgery will zap it and I will be starting all over. I just wondered when am I going to be able to run again?

Re: Running after TAH BSO

I was running 15-20km a week, had an LAVH, and doc said 6-8 weeks before you start to run. I plan on being able to walk my route by then, and then interim train (walk, then run, then walk) to slowly get back to pre-op distance. I too figure that I'll be back at square one, and I try to get out and walk every day, but now feeling a little overdone. When I do run, I am going to strap down that belly, maybe a good panty girdle? Because it's feeling pretty loose.

Re: Running after TAH BSO

I'm 3 weeks out from robotic lavh/ bso, actually going into my 4th week. I'm just wondering when can I start running again. Im planning to run a half marathon in may. Before my surgery I've been logging 15-20 mi/ wk. I ran a full marathon a month before my surgery. Or is it too soon for me to even consider doing it for now?

Re: Running after TAH BSO

I am a marathoner, running 20-30 miles a week previously. My doc told me 8 weeks to begin running. However, that being said, when I saw him at 4.5 weeks he told me at 6 weeks I could step up the walkn to power walking and if that felt ok I could throw in some jogging every few minutes. He told me to let my discomfort be my guide. Friday I will be at 6 weeks so I will definitely be stepping it up. I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to do a 10k by November if your comeback is slow and well timed out. Good luck with your surgery!

Re: Running after TAH BSO

It will all depend on your recovery and what your surgeon allows you to do. I gradually built up my walking over the 6 week recovery period and was back to normal walking pace and distance by the end of it. I was always careful not to overdo it. You will be surprised that you do not lose as much aerobic fitness as you think. I found my legs were the weak part when I started back to running.
At week 7, I started c25k workout, but by about week 5 I was able to run the 5km pretty much as I used to. I stress that when I started back running, it did not cause any pain or discomfort. I think gradually increasing the amount that you run is the best way to do it, and really listen to your body. My motto was:"if it hurts-don't do it".

I agree Zany about do what doesn't hurt. Also just adding on a little distance to your runs everytime. I am 4 weeks post op TAH. I have done a few days of running this past week only a mile at a slow pace. For me it feels better than walking. I'm a 5 mile hill runner. Like hearing your journey. Thanks good luck

Re: Running after TAH BSO

I'm 7 weeks yesterday and did run 5:15, walk 1:45x 6 for a total of 3.25 miles. It felt great and I could do longer and harder. I don't like rest days so I am going slowly every day taking 15 seconds off my walk and adding to my run until I can link them together and run 4 miles cont. make sense?

Post op I walked a little everyday from the time I got home. At first it was only 400 ft but I did it 2-3 times a day. It kept adding and adding so I was walking four miles by five weeks and got the go ahead.

Maybe too much info but yes you will be back at it before you know it and it will feel so great!

Re: Running after TAH BSO

Not too much info - I think the point is to build up gradually starting with short walks right from the start of the post op recovery period. Then you can be ready to gradually start running when you get the all clear from your doctor.

Re: Running after TAH BSO

Very helpful and encouraging . Thank you, my daughter and I are running the Tinkrt Bell half marathon January 20th, if my healing goes well I should be able to get back easy running December 1st so even if I have to walk run this one I will be ready! Yay! I will update this as I begin running again, I too have been walking daily and plan to slowly increase my distance as my recovery period progresses. So far just around the block but by week 6 I should be walking my old running routes
