Hospital stay?

I'm scheduled for TVH on 8/16/10. I'm seeing alot on here about people staying overnight in the hospital. I will be going home the same day...or what they call 23hr admit that is considered outpatient. I am now wondering if that is too soon.

I'm also wondering what to expect afterwards. Will I need someone at home to help me? Will I really be "down" for a couple weeks?

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Hospital stay?

and

It's great to have you join us! We'll do what we can to help you prepare!

I had a TVH and yes, 23 hours or less is considered outpatient. Mine was considered outpatient even though I spent the night in the hospital. Afterwards, remind yourself that even though you don't have any incisions or outward signs that you had a hysterectomy, you need to take care of yourself!

My husband took off about a week and half to help me. Honestly, I didn't really need him that long as I was feeling pretty good and able to take care of myself with no problems. As far as being 'down' for a couple of weeks, well, you won't be stuck in bed. Walking is encouraged to help your system recover and get moving again. The initial recovery period for a TVH is an average of 6 weeks. While I felt great before that time, I still had internal healing going on and continued to follow my doctor's instructions.

You will probably have some post-op restrictions afterwards. Some of my restrictions were no housework, no vacuuming, no laundry, no lifting of more than 5 pounds, nothing in the vagina, no tub baths, hot tubs, pools or lake, and no driving until my doctor released me to do so.

I encourage you to do some reading around here. A couple of great places to start are Hysterectomy Checkpoints and the Pre-Op page.

Welcome again and best wishes for a successful surgery and recovery!

Re: Hospital stay?

Hi bboop67!!

I had TVH with repairs on a Tuesday and I was supposed to be out the following morning before 7 a.m. Dr told DH right after my surgery that I would be in until Thursday because of the extensive repairwork. They released me late Thursday afternoon.

Don't worry, your Dr will keep you in longer if he/she thinks it is necessary.

Hugs,
Suzanne

Re: Hospital stay?

I had a TVH June 30. I also was outpatient (23 hrs). I stayed overnight and went home the next morning.
