Should I prepare work for a modified work week?

I'm just curious about this.. I see my Dr next week and I'm thinking I'll be cleared to return Aug 9. I normally work 8-4 I also work at a bank so I have alot of sitting, walking etc. I am just curious if my Dr will make me go back on a modified work week, like maybe starting back with a 10-2 shift.

What do you gals think?? I'd like to give work a heads up so they can schedule in extra help as I believe they have me back as full time, any input is appreciated

Re: Should I prepare work for a modified work week?

Obviously everyone heals differently. I am a nurse working on a very busy pediatric oncology/BMT floor. I went back to work last week at 6 weeks post op and while I was very nervous about it and was tired, I did OK. During 12 hour day shifts there is rarely the opportunity to go to the bathroom let alone get off your feet for a few minutes. I've been lucky to have a good recovery. I hope your return to work goes well.

Re: Should I prepare work for a modified work week?

personally, i think I would ask my work if i could start back at a modified schedule for the first week, regardless of what the doctor says.

It just makes sense to ease back in if you can, however, i know that is not always possible, so you just have to do the best you can with what you end up with.

good luck!

Re: Should I prepare work for a modified work week?

I am almost 6 weeks post op from a LAVH RSO. I went back to work part time at 3 weeks and I have been full time for the last 2 weeks. I do get pretty tired by the end of the day but I'm glad I'm back to work. Everyone heals differently, my doctor wrote a note saying he would release me for work as I tolerated it. Maybe you could try that, but listen to your body.

Re: Should I prepare work for a modified work week?

My leave was for 6-8 weeks. I went back after 6 weeks just this Monday. I thought I was feeling pretty good but planned on half days anyway. Feeling good at home and feeling good at work are two different things. If you can ease back in, I would. Philliesfan, you have a demanding job at the best of times!

I'm 8 wkd went back today lasted 3 hours instead of 4. I am on half days for 2 wkd. I thought the dr was over reacting doing 2 weeks of part time when I was working overtime every week. Well the pain fro sitting and then some spotting did me in. So I wii try again Monday. It takes time to heal and you don't realize how much that first day takes out of you until you try it

Yep - a quiet day can be crazy! I'm pretty surprised that I did OK!

Re: Should I prepare work for a modified work week?

I really like the idea of easing back into your schedule.

I took 6 weeks off after my TAH, and after going back to work (also a banker -- I was second-in-charge of a $125 million independent bank) I realized I should have taken 8 weeks off. I was sooo tired and sore every night! But then, I didn't ease back into my schedule. I dove back in.

A year later, one of my employees had a TVH, and she said she'd be back to work in 2 weeks. I told her no way -- I didn't want to see her back full time for 6 weeks. She argued. I held my ground. (Have you EVER heard of a boss telling someone to stay home? ) So anyway, at 4 weeks post-op, she came back for 4 hours a day, at 5 weeks she was 6 hours a day, and at 6 weeks she was back full-time, although she still took a couple of longer lunches.

She was as surprised as I had been at the fatigue that just overtakes you as your body is in healing mode.

Hope things go well for you.

Re: Should I prepare work for a modified work week?

Seriously, it pays off to pay attention to your body. My first day back after a TLH/BSO, I felt great - then the second day I was knackered by 11 a.m. (I think I was high on endorphins on Day 1 because of all the well-wishes and hugs I got).

Looking back, I definitely should have done half days my first week back.

Cheers,
Kara
