Re: Anybody use a Cpap machine for sleep apnea

As with everything, double check with your doctor but I can't see where it would be a concern.

The CPAP just keeps your airway open so telling you that it could be a problem would be like them telling you that breathing could be a problem for you.

My husband uses one and I miss it when he has a cold and can't use it. It is my white noise....they just need one with an mp3 port to play music too!

Re: Anybody use a Cpap machine for sleep apnea

I know that during my pre-op on the paperwork they gave me, it stated to bring the CPAP with me if I use it (I don't). Also you have to tell them so the docs can watch you closely and make sure you're doing okay during the surgery. From what I experienced, it's okay to use it, but I would advise you to ask your doctor to see his/her opinion on it.

Re: Anybody use a Cpap machine for sleep apnea

Glad you asked that question. I also use a Cpap and was wondering the same thing. The only thing I came up with on my own was if they have you hooked up to oxygen while there then cpap would not be needed?!>

My problem is I cant stand the smell of the tubing!!

Re: Anybody use a Cpap machine for sleep apnea

I was asked to bring my mask with me and they had a machine set up in the room for me. If you use it nightly they want you to use it in the hospital. They also need to know for the surgery - it affects something - not sure what., so be sure to let them know at pre-op.

Re: Anybody use a Cpap machine for sleep apnea

I have sleep apnea and use a CPAP every night.

The anesthesiologist told me just to bring my mask and tubing, but not my machine.

When I got into my room after the recovery room, which I have no memory of at all, they did not have a sleep apnea machine there for me, which concerned me, but I was on morphine and kept falling asleep. They did have the nasal cannula oxygen on me, so I guess I was getting oxygen from that.

I had to ask several times during the few times I was actually conscious when they were going to bring the CPAP machine. The respiratory therapist did finally bring a portable one late Friday night (surgery was late Friday morning -- 10 or 11 o'clock) and connected the oxygen thru the tubing for me.

The only bad thing about it was that if I took off the headgear for even 1 second, an alarm would start screeching and we couldn't figure out how to turn it off.

I pretty much have to wear my CPAP mask or I wake up gasping for air and with my heart beating way too fast.

Best wishes,

Re: Anybody use a Cpap machine for sleep apnea

I did ask my doctor by the way and he said that they will monitor me more closely and that I would be in recovery longer than an average person. He also told me to tell the anesthesiologist and he/she would tell me what to do. So that's good.
My twin brother had surgery on his knee and he has sleep apnea his doctor told him they would keep oxygen on him so he didnt have to bring his.
So I will find out Thursday.

Re: Anybody use a Cpap machine for sleep apnea

I was told to bring my cpap in but didn't do it, and when I woke up from surgery they wouldn't give me anything for pain! They said I got sleep apnea in the recovery room and my o2 sats were too low, they were afraid if they gave me pain meds I would go to sleep and have sleep apnea. Yikes! I was in so much pain I started crying. Finally a friend of mine came and told the nurse she would watch me sleep and to give me something for the pain. I strongly advise you to bring it in. Good luck!

Re: Anybody use a Cpap machine for sleep apnea

I just recently was diagnosed w/sleep apnea and just got my CPAP 4 days before surgery so I brought it but left it in the car as they instructed in pre-op. They definitely wanted to know and wanted to be reminded because they watch your oxygen levels closer and probably only give you minimal pain meds to see how you do. Look at the side affects sheet on your pain meds (I had Percocet) and it specifically says something about telling your doctor if you have sleep apnea because they may want to give you something different). The pain meds knock you out so much I think they worry you'll stop breathing . . . but just my interpretation so check w/your doc! I did not use my CPAP in the hospital, but did have very close observation in recovery and they seemed to check my oxygen levels more than anything the day of surgery & following day before I was discharged. I had oxygen until about 4 hours prior to discharge.
