Uneven pain and swelling?

I am 6 days out from my TAH. I am having a lot more pain and swelling on my left side of my lower abdomen than my right. The pain is different, too. On the right it is just an ache and responds pretty well to my ibuprofen. On the left, there is a sharper pain, almost like a tearing pain, and there is more swelling. I just wondered if anyone else had very different pain and swelling on opposite sides of their body.

Re: Uneven pain and swelling?

Hi alli.sunshine,

I had far more pain on my left side than right. I wouldn't call it tearing, though. More like recovering from a burn. But it was much worse. In fact, I stayed on my Darvocet for the first 2 weeks primarily due to the increased pain I had from the left side. And I am still lopsided in my swelling - it's just less swelling now at 7 weeks. : /

I had a TAH/BSO - and a lot of endo on my left side, so I attributed the extra pain to that. It seemed like a number of other ladies had more pain on one side than the other. Maybe it has to do with stitches or something.

If your pain is really tearing and unbearable, you might want to have it checked out. Remember, you (and/or your insurance company) are shelling out big bucks for this surgery, you are entitled to peace of mind. Also, there are no awards for being the first off pain meds - if you need to take the stronger stuff and you can do so without complications, do it before the pain gets ahead of you.

Good luck! Hugs to you!!

Re: Uneven pain and swelling?

my right side hurt worse than my left, and that is the side where i had the most trouble before surgery....

be sure and check your incision on the side that aches worse and is more swollen. If you have spots that are hard, painful to touch, red, warm.... and if you are running any temperature, you may want to call and just let the doctor know.

My left side started to sting more and and developed a hard very tender place, red and warm...turns out i had an infection in the incision...go figure...i never ran a temp though...

It never hurts to check with your doctors office, after all that is what they are here for.

Hope you feel better soon.
