Endo found at TAH/BSO What do I need to ask Dr next week?

New to this section. Had my surgery last Monday for fibroids. Surprise Endo found. Explains why I had had so much pain, etc. I am post-meno...comes early for some in my family. Dr. was puzzled about why fibroids had been growing since it had been at least 10 yrs since last period. I am now more puzzled as to what to do about HRT. Am newly diagnosed Diabetic so already had doubts as to safety of HRT. Also family history of heart attacks, ovarine and colon cancers. What with Endo thrown into the mix am even more concerned/confused. I don't know yet if she was able to remove all the Endo and will need to ask. We were more concerned about cancer possibility pre surgery. She told me initial path says there was no cancer, only fibroids and endo.
Need suggestions for questions to ask at post-op next Tuesday. Thanks.

My Grandmother had breast cancer not ovarian cancer. Don't know why I put the wrong cancer down, except I was thinking how the three (ovarian, colon and breast) cancers are sometimes genetical linked.

If you choose to use estrogen replacement, ask about adding progesterone too, to protect against more endo growth. I have had endo post-menopause too.

It's virtually impossible to get all the endo. It helps to have the progesterone to balance the estrogen replacement.

I am sorry that endometriosis was found during your hysterectomy. Hopefully your doctor was able to remove all of it!

When it comes to endometriosis and HRT, there is no simple one size fits all answer! Besides your family medical history and your own personal health history, your age will need to be considered when determining what to do with regard to HRT. The younger we are the more critical estrogen might be.

While you are talking to your gynecologist about all of this, do not leave out whomever is treating your diabetes. It is possible that doctor will have some very valid reasons why you should or should not use HRT in conjunction with the diabetes diagnosis.

Remember, there is no absolutely right or wrong answer on this topic and we won't all make the same decision. In fact, even with stage IV endometriosis, I have both of my ovaries and thus more estrogen that you will likely ever get via HRT!

You might want to read through some of our Endometriosis Resources and look through our www.hormonejungle.com site before your upcoming appointment.

Re: Endo found at TAH/BSO What do I need to ask Dr next week?

Thanks for the suggestions Calypso and Weiser. My GYN had a ONC and Radiologist look me over while I was in the OR because she was concerned about possible cancer. She said they both thought there was none and then told me she had read the path report 4 days later and it said no cancer but I had Endo. I was so relieved about the Cancer I forgot to ask if she had removed most or all of the Endo. So that is a on my list for Tues. I turned 53 last month. My sister who is about 59 is on the Climera patch. She said she had a really bad reaction to a different form of estrogen but doesn't remember what type it was.
I'll be scheduling an appt with the Dr. treating my Diabetes soon. He has been concerned about my BP being too high. It has been lower since I last saw him due to vascular surgery. This factor might alter what he feels is best regarding HRT. I have read that estrogen may help lower blood glucose. A definite benefit for Diabetics. Progesteron however, may cause more problems for Diabetics. Thanks for reminding me about the hormone jungle and endo resources.
I have glanced at them a few times when I first joined but haven't searched them yet. I have tried a few googgle searches of Hystersisters and will do some more before next week.
Again thanks for the help.

Re: Endo found at TAH/BSO What do I need to ask Dr next week?

Had my 2 week post-op appt with GYN today. She said she doesn't usually recommend HRT to someone in my situation. She did ask what I would prefer. From what I had read here and elsewhere I think no HRT would be the correct choice. I will talk with my Diabetes Dr about it at my next appt. with him. She was resonably confident that the Endo was all removed and should not come back.
Thank you for your help.
