Work and Disability

I had my surgery on July 13th and was put on 8 weeks disability. Week 3 my dr allowed me to go to work about 10 hours a week, mostly to help me financially. My work was being great about my limited hours and letting me work when I could etc.

This last week, my boss asked me to come in on Wednesday (I've been going in on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and some Saturdays). I asked her if there was a specific reason she needed me on Wednesday, she said not really but she really wanted to go over this report while the other girl was in the office.

So, I give in and say that I would come in for two hours. I get there and instead of going over the report, I'm accused of creating tension between the part-time girl and myself. I haven't seen or talked to the part-time girl for over 5 weeks. I was shocked and told my boss I had no idea what this was about.... the part-time girl basically started going off on me. I looked at my boss and said, I can't do this today and that i was here to go over the report (and of course I couldn't keep my crying under control). I walked back to my office for some privacy while I tried to pull myself together.... my boss came out and apologized and her and I talked about other things. Then the part-time girl comes in and starts in again!!!

The 2 hours ends with everyone upset and me telling my boss that i was going to start looking for another job. I went to see my dr after work and she advised me to stay away from work until Sept 7th. I don't want to go back, but I can't just quit either. I don't know what to do.......

Thanks for listening!

Re: Work and Disability

I am sorry you are having to go through this at this time.
How very insensitive first of all of that person going off on you and secon of all your boss should have intervened. I think you should listen to your Dr. about not going back until Sept. Hopefully things will get better.

Re: Work and Disability

Stay away from work as advised by your doctor, and in the meantime, start a job search. Don't quit your job unless you can afford to.

I agree with Lauriees! Who needs all that with what you're going thru now?
Good luck and feel well!

Re: Work and Disability

Hang in there, my sister!
I've been lucky the company I work for is allowing me the full 6 weeks off. I completely understand financial stresses. Combine that with hormones, surgery, recovery and unsympathetic co-workers - your just asking for emotional trauma. Do you have short-term disability you can claim, vacation time or any other insurance you can utilize?
Take advantage of everything you can, stay away from the office unless you just absolutely have to go in.
We, as women, are always so keen to take care of other people, family and things that we often don't take care of ourselves.
Now is the time you NEED to take care of yourself, both physically and emotionally because no one else can do that but you.
Good luck to you - take care and know that you have lots of friends here that can direct you in the right direction!

Re: Work and Disability

Sorry you had such an awful day. I understand needing to get back to work. I've been out with medical issues since January (lost FMLA protection in April and still had 2 surgeries ahead) and DH only had a two month temp job during this time. You need to heal. If you try too much it could affect you more in the long run. Late payment bill stress is bad stress, but add delayed healing on top and it could multiply.
Sounds like part time girl has major issues and none of them are your fault. She was so out of line.

Re: Work and Disability

Sorry to hear about your experience. That is just awful!

What I've noticed is that people are very odd about part-time schedules. I see it at work all of the time. I work in the staffing industry. Those that work full time feel that the part time people get extra special treatment. Meanwhile, they're receiving less pay! And in general, women get jealous, too.

Remember that your surgery was very serious. Both physically and mentally, you need the time off from work. I took 8 weeks off. It was a struggle for me financially, but I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

Know we are here for you if you need us.

I'll be keeping you in my thoughts...

Re: Work and Disability

Listen to your Dr. stay home take care of yourself and don't let an insensitive co-worker affect your health mental or physical you need time to recover and deserve the time to heal..If you are on fmla they can't force you to work more than you are able so they will just have to deal with it as for your insensitve co-worker she may some day face a similar sitution and will probably feel bad for her treatment of you .....I'm sorry for your situation Hang in there
