anyone not have terrible pain pre-op?

I am getting a little weird-ed out. So many of you have issues with pain which results in the hysterctomy. I have a large fibroid, which is putting pressure on my bladder, that's about my only real symptom...going to the bathroom. I am 32, so my doc first suggested myomectomy, but I'm not having any more kids, so I opted for the hyster. I do also have the issue of a belly sticking out, but that's about it.

Did any of you go through this procedure with similar issues, that are "minor" compared to so many of you? I opted to take it out, so no more fibroids come,no more need for surgery, no more periods & no more need for birth control. I especially do not want to need a 2nd surgery later for another fibroid.

Re: anyone not have terrible pain pre-op?

Hi, KimDJ. I'm in a very similar situation to you. I have no real pain, very heavy periods and a history of cervical dysplasia. I'm 44 had tubal ligation at 40 (hoping to avoid the Big C) and just recently found out am now anemic. I have had the fibroids for years but one of them has recently started growing, and is significantly larger than sinc my last exam, hence my doctors concern and the need to the hyster. I also have the protruding belly. I should note that I have a high pain threshold, but other than a backache and some joint pain in my hips have been blessed not to have the severe pains of some of our systers.

Re: anyone not have terrible pain pre-op?

HI Kim,
I have had fibroids for years and no pain other than the one day of heavy periods (my second day each month). I got a new Dr and he told me from my MRI images that on top of my small fibroids which I guess I had about 4 or 5 I also had an enlarged uterus and adenomyosis. So he gave me options and becuause of what he told me and his track record with the da vinci surgery I opted for that. Actually just had it done on Tuesday. Except for my asking folks to pick stuff that I had dropped up for me and moving a little bit slower you would not know I had surgery this week. I am enjoying the freedom already since at this time I should have been having my period and I an totally not even spotting 3 days after surgury so I am really happy. I have no pain and I feel absolutely great. My Dr. I was told by many has the da vinci down pat and you will not feel a thing and I can now testify to that.
Hope you make the decision that is best for you.
Best wishes.

Re: anyone not have terrible pain pre-op?

i also have not had a lot of pain. I have (had) three week long periods, One week of heavy heavy bleeding and clots, then two weeks of what I call "icky brown goo". This left very little "clean time" in my 32 day cycle.

I did have nasty cramps too but I am used to those as I always had them since day one. After many ultrasounds and a D&C to find the answer to the problem there was no solid answers. I have two wonderful children and got my tubal ligation at the birth of the second one via c-section. So when faced with hormone therapy to control my periods, which makes me pack on the pounds, or just taking it out. I said "GET RID OF IT!"

Once it was out they discovered the issue, we are still awaiting the pathology report but my Gyno is sure it is Adenomyosis and aside from the recovery pain I actually feel a lot better already. I feel less bloated (even though the scale and my clothes say otherwise) and "lighter"

Hope that helps you

Re: anyone not have terrible pain pre-op?

I hear you! Never had problems with periods, bleeding, tumors, fibroids, cysts or pain with sex. My early stage cervical cancer hasn't produced a single symptom, so the cure is going to be far worse than the disease has been.

Re: anyone not have terrible pain pre-op?

I also had no pain, other than regular menstrual pain (that did not require any OTC pain meds). The periods were happening too frequently and were too heavy and long. Fibroids were the problem and at my age (46) an ablation did not seem worth it. I had the hysterectomy and the problem is gone. I also don't miss the big belly during the frequent periods.

Re: anyone not have terrible pain pre-op?

I have a regular length period but I do bleed pretty good and have clots bad. I have fibroids which my doc was surprised to find. I had just not been feeling right and had a month where I had bled out of the normal cycle time. I have cramps but who didn't.... But when I talked to him at my regular exam time I mentioned this and some cancer in my family in the female organs that resurfaced lately and he did a vaginal ultrasound. He said he didn't think it would find anything but he did it to try to ease my mind... well he found the fibroids. I am 36 and I dont want more children. I have one and she is about to be 16. So I opted to have the davinci robot surgery. My surgery is on Sept 16th.

Re: anyone not have terrible pain pre-op?

I was feeling the same way, I did not have any pain, my period was 4-5 days long, not very heavy and showed up about every 30-32 days. The only thing I really noticed was needing to use the bathroom more often and then found laying on my stomach was uncomfortable (like there was a ball under me). I went to the doc and low and behold a 20+cm fibroid was there. I frequently feel unworthy when reading other people's history. I now am considering myself very lucky.

Re: anyone not have terrible pain pre-op?

Funny... I just came to the boards to post a new topic about not being in much pain...
I was having a lot of pain from endo, that's what led me to choose the surgery. But ever since I got my date, the pain is very mild. I keep making comments to friends and family about how embarrassed I'll be if I come out of surgery and my doc says "everything looked perfectly normal.... I think you're just crazy" I'm currently having my last visit from Aunt Flo... even she is being easy this month. My pre-op is 9/14, and I'm going to jokingly mention this concern to her just in case, everything does look normal, at least she'll know I'm already thinking it.
I have faith that doctors won't do the surgery if there really isn't a reason. I hope that's the case anyways....

Re: anyone not have terrible pain pre-op?

I was glad to read this thread. I am having a hyst Tuesday for two fibroids and enlarged uterus. I don't have a lot of symptoms, mostly pressure. I do have some mild pain and discomfort about two weeks a month, but nothing unbearable. Ibuprofen usually takes care of it. My period is not too bad, but I'm on the pill. The gynecologist said one fibroid is "huge", about grapefruit size. It has pushed my cervix over to one side and tilted my uterus around. Since I'm only 35 it will likely only continue to grow. So I decided to get rid of it. But, when I read on here all the misery a lot of the sisters are going thru I wonder if I should do this considering it's not that bad. I said this to my mom, and she said "not everything has to be an emergency". So, I guess, because it will only likely get worse and I will probably reach the point of being miserable, I might as well nip it in the bud.
