Maternity Ward??

I read a hint on this site, that said ask your hospital where they "put" you. When my hospital called today to schedule my preop hospital appt, I remembered to ask. Yep, they will put me in maternity ward! I said "um, no, I will not go there". She said not a problem as they get many requests to go to Med/Surg floor. I can't imagine trying to recover with women screaming and babies crying! This hospital trip, I want princess treatment! Make sure you ask!

Re: Maternity Ward??

Glad you remembered to ask!

Just to warn you a bit, I was on a the Med/Surgery floor. Rather than hearing women screaming and babies crying, I heard an elderly gentleman and a young boy screaming down my hall!

So, take some earplugs, your iPod, etc. just in case!

Re: Maternity Ward??

I don't know if I will be put in a room, or go home yet, but I think I might like the babies crying more.

Re: Maternity Ward??

When I had my TAH on 8/4 the only beds they had available were in the pediatric ward. Worked out perfectly. Had the room to myself from Wed to Saturday. Was a very quiet ward. They kept trying to give me apple juice, which I don't like.

Re: Maternity Ward??

I am lucky that this is a fairly new hospital so all rooms are private. I figured a closed door can hide a guy screaming, but babies and women in labor is a whole different pitch! And much more commotion in the halls with the babies being wheeled up and down all hours.

Re: Maternity Ward??

I was on a maternity floor that had 3 deliveries in the 22 hours I was there and I didn't hear a thing.

Re: Maternity Ward??

I was in a labor/delivery suite 5 weeks ago and loved it. As someone who went through secondary infertility, the years between have been good--had it been sooner, I don't think it would have been as good. They didn't have wonderful rooms with Bose radios 21 yrs ago when my daughter was born. I shared a room back then over my 5 days with 2 different women b/c I had a c-sec. I LOVED the suite room--and it was in a "pod" that was less busy than the other 2, but even then I only heard 1 baby in 4 days-and it was a crier and the nurse brought it out to to go back to the nursery. The nurses were VERY versed in handling my recovery--and the room was wonderful. Just a suggestion though--I didn't have a chance to prep my pastor--and he was quite surprised to find me there! He did come back for a 2nd visit, thankfully!

Re: Maternity Ward??

I would rather be in maternity area; the people in this area are overall healthier than in other parts of the hospital, and as I am immune compromised, I am certainly concerned about that.

Re: Maternity Ward??

You do have enough time before your surgery to go and visit--see if you can. You can decide. A friend was in ped's a few years ago and had a clown visit! They were surprised--but gave her the same balloon animal as the kids! Our LDR rooms/suites are very quiet and large--I was surprised! You couldn't hear a thing from the hallway. I never heard anything from any of the deliveries. I encountered a few young gals who arrived at 6 am for their inducing labor as I walked the hall one early a.m. thinking I wouldn't see anyone at that hour! Good luck with your decision--and it'll all go well!!
