Incision healing (post-myomectomy)

Hi Everyone! I feel a bit out of place as I can SO relate to all the people who have had a recent hysterectomy because my surgery was just as major and involves so many of the same questions - but they were able to leave my uterus. Thus I don't have a hysterectomy date and can't post anything in any of the hysterectomy forums.

Anyway I noticed tonight after I showered that just at the top of my belly button my incision has split open a bit after my staples were removed - it's maybe half an inch area. There's still a steri strip kind of hanging on but not doing much. Anyway I don't know how bad this is. It looks like granulating tissue to me in there but my boyfriend thinks it looks a bit puss like.

How worried should I be? I left a message at the doctor's office and will call them tomorrow but I don't need to call the after hours emergency line for this do i?

Re: Incision healing

Your nose (or your boyfriend's nose) can be the best indicator of infection. I'm not a medical professional but I have had several surgeries. They all ooze clear fluids as part of the healing process. But if the fluid is cloudy or has a foul smell that's not so normal.

I had my gallbladder removed 2 years ago and my belly button incision got infected. The tissue around the wound felt hot and hard and was exquisitely tender to the touch. More tender than it had been right after the surgery itself. I also had a fever.

I would definitely follow up with the doctor tomorrow. Does your local hospital have an advice line you can call? The one near me has 'ask-a-nurse' where you can talk to an RN about your symptoms and they can probably give you the best advice on whether or not to go to the ER.

Good luck with your recovery!
