anti-depressants/anti-anxiety meds and post-op

In mid-July, I got diagnosed & hospitalized with severe depression. I was having a HORRIBLE time accepting that this surgery was going to happen. I got put on all kinds of new meds, and I finally feel stable and really okay with everthing.

My question is, do any of you feel as if the meds are masking the grief?? I know three weeks ago, I was a wreck over this. But now, "Okay. Yep, its over. No big deal." NOT what I expected!!!! It isn't that I want to be miserable and severely depressed, but... I also don't want the meds to bury my feelings and make them totally out of reach. Does this make sense?

Just wondering. Thanks for your input.

Re: anti-depressants/anti-anxiety meds and post-op

I was diagnosed with severe chronic depression and rapid cycling bi polar disorder and years ago. I tried So many meds and med combos!

I finally just stopped taking all of them and just tried to control it myself.

Earlier this year I went to the gyn and started this journey and he gave me 5 mg of Norethindrone which is progestin and immediately I stopped having mood swings, depression, hopelessness was gone.I could even hold a regular sleep schedule for the first time in my life, even made insomnia go away.
So I now believe it was never bi polar to begin with.
Just had wacky hormones.

Anti depressants do not mask your grief, they just balance the chemicals in your brain. There is a chemical in your brain that acts like oil in a motor and stress makes you burn it faster and you run out and you get depression. The pills help your brain make more oil so your motor(brain) works properly.

It doesnt mask the emotions, you can still feels sad or feel grief when you take them but the meds won't let you become depressed over it.

Keep healing and stay comfy ladies

Turtleteah -

The anti-D's shouldn't mask your grief. They should just bring the floor up so you can function and aren't overwhelmed. I still cry and feel my emotions.

If you don't than maybe they are too strong or aren't the right ones for you.
