Top News / Remove Fallopian Tubes as Standard Practice

I had my hysterectomy and left my ovaries 2.5 years ago.

Top Headline News the past two days in Vancouver, BC CANADA.

Doctors in B.C. want to completely change the way that hysterectomies are performed, in hopes of preventing more women from dying from ovarian cancer.

They're asking B.C. gynecologic oncologists to fully remove the Fallopian tubes when performing hysterectomies or certain types of tubal ligation, instead of leaving them in as they usually do.

The doctors say the new approach could be a key way to prevent ovarian cancer, perhaps cutting deaths by anywhere from 30 to 50 per cent.

If you search Fallopian Tube Vancouver you can read all about this recent study.

Re: Top News / Remove Fallopian Tubes as Standard Practice

Wow - that is very interesting! I have my right ovary only but didn't even think about the tubes. So do they normally leave them in the US? I will ask my GYN when I go on Monday.

Thanks for sharing!!

Re: Top News / Remove Fallopian Tubes as Standard Practice

I just had my hysterectomy Aug 31 and the surgeon had planned to take both tubes. The reason is that if the cancer spread up through the uterus it might have gone into the tubes and thus could threaten the ovaries. As it turned out, she only took one since taking the other would have disrupted the blood flow to the ovary too much. So I have no uterus, cervix and only 1 fallopian tube now. Luckily my pathology showed no cancer at all outside the cervix.

Re: Top News / Remove Fallopian Tubes as Standard Practice

Hi Deb...Standard practice in Canada is to leave the tubes. Not anymore, in Vancouver they are going to start urging gynos in Canada to remove the tubes. Studies here show a significant decrease in ovarian cancer. I am not too sure what is standard practice in the US?

Not that ovarian cancer is common but if it reduces your chances that much why not.

I myself kept my ovaries as I was only 45 at time of hysterectomy.
