Stop Supplements Before Surgery?

I just thought about this on my way into the office this morning...

I'm scheduled for my Da Vinci partial hyster on October 13 and daily, I take iron pills because I'm anemic, Omega-3 because I have high cholesterol, and glucosamine to help with some joint issues I have. I haven't mentioned any of this to the doctor. Does anyone know if I need to stop taking all of this before surgery?

Re: Stop Supplements Before Surgery?

You should let your doctor know what ingredients are in the supplements. I take some supplements for other reasons and I did stop taking mine prior to surgery. It really depends on whats in them. Certain things like garlic, ginko, and ghensing I have been told are blood thinners so please check with your doctor on specifics on what you are taking. Good luck

Re: Stop Supplements Before Surgery?

Definitely share EVERY pill, supplement, vitamin, medication, etc. you take with your doctor. Many supplements and medications have to be stopped anywhere from 7 - 14 days prior to a surgery. Only your doctor can determine which ones you should and should not stop taking in the day leading up to your surgery.

Re: Stop Supplements Before Surgery?

About a month before my surgery, I saw my doctor/surgeon and brought all my supplements with me as instructed by her nurse.

My doctor went through all of them- reading the labels, etc (she's very thorough- just what I wanted in my surgeon, ya' know what I mean?...).

Good luck with you surgery! We'll be here for you!

Re: Stop Supplements Before Surgery?

I stopped taking glucosamine prior to my surgery, even before my pre-op because I read it can cause bruising, and who needs any additional bruising. Also, if any of the labels have hidden vitamin E in them, you need to stop taking them. They are blood thinners.

Re: Stop Supplements Before Surgery?

Thanks for all of your replies. Sounds like I have a phone call to make to the doctor.

Yes, you need to tell your doctor everything you are taking on a regular basis, prescription or otherwise. :-)
