I just thought about this on my way into the office this morning...
I'm scheduled for my Da Vinci partial hyster on October 13 and daily, I take iron pills because I'm anemic, Omega-3 because I have high cholesterol, and glucosamine to help with some joint issues I have. I haven't mentioned any of this to the doctor. Does anyone know if I need to stop taking all of this before surgery?
You should let your doctor know what ingredients are in the supplements. I take some supplements for other reasons and I did stop taking mine prior to surgery. It really depends on whats in them. Certain things like garlic, ginko, and ghensing I have been told are blood thinners so please check with your doctor on specifics on what you are taking. Good luck
Definitely share EVERY pill, supplement, vitamin, medication, etc. you take with your doctor. Many supplements and medications have to be stopped anywhere from 7 - 14 days prior to a surgery. Only your doctor can determine which ones you should and should not stop taking in the day leading up to your surgery.
I stopped taking glucosamine prior to my surgery, even before my pre-op because I read it can cause bruising, and who needs any additional bruising. Also, if any of the labels have hidden vitamin E in them, you need to stop taking them. They are blood thinners.
