dVH recovery timeline question

OK, maybe this is a strange question.

I am scheduled to have a dVH (uterus and monster fibroid only things going) on Oct. 19th and I have a work related conference that I really want to go to 10 days post op. Is this going to be doable if I get someone to drive me and just go, sit and listen for the day. I need to get the continuing ed. hours for my professional license and this one is actually inexpensive and local (most are big bucks and far away). I will be able to get up and walk around if needed and I think the sessions are for an hour or so and then you move on to the next one type of thing. I know it will be a long day but I am sure by that point I will be going batty and be wanting to get out of the house.

OK, am I nuts? I need to send in my $$ ASAP if I am going to go. Thanks---L

Re: dVH recovery timeline question

From my experience, I would not count on it. I think I had a great recovery..minimal issues, minimal pain. DaVinci total hyst. I was walking up to 2.5 miles at a time on the 2nd wk after surgery. But I would not have been able to do a conference. Alot of downtime is to be expected. Sitting up after the surgery for an extended amt of time can be exhausting. I personally would not recommend trying it. I went back to my desk job at 3 wks.

Re: dVH recovery timeline question

At 17 days post-op (after a daVinci procedure) I had tickets to a matinee theater performance across town. My husband drove us, dropped me off at handicapped parking so I wouldn't have to walk through the parking lot. There were stairs in and around the theater. It was too much too walk, even with Advil/Motrin in me. It was too difficult for me to sit through the performance. Sitting upright took a lot of effort and I became very uncomfortable. I really needed to be in bed or on a couch. I had trouble focusing on the musical (Wicked) and could not follow the story line very well. Bad idea all around. After the show, I was supertired and had to recline in the car. Rested the remaining weekend. My back hurt, my incisions hurt, just very achy all over.
Since then, I've done very well. Started walking at six weeks, running at eight weeks. Now I am four months post op and the swelly belly is gone. I have lost weight and look and feel great.
Don't rush into normal activities. Healing takes time and in the long run you will feel better if you don't rush it. Setbacks can happen.

Re: dVH recovery timeline question

Hi L-
I'm betting you can make it to your class. I'm 48 and also had my dvh for enlarged uterus and "monster" fibroid. My surgeon took the uterus/fibroid out of my right side - I was "knife-in-my-side" sore on the right side for the first 4 days - then I magically awoke on the 5th day pain-free. Of course, I overdid it a bit on day 5 and felt pretty crummy on day 6 again, so don't do that!! I was really fortunate to have a super-easy recovery...I. also didn't have the gas pains so many complain of. I only missed 9 days of work, so hopefully if you have an easy recovery, you can make it to your class.
Best wishes for a speedy & uneventful recovery!
