2 weeks post op - discomfort

I'll start with an apology. I just found you all and have never posted to any message board before! I am 2 weeks post op -TAH- today. I had an unfortunate time in the hospital with pain control measures not working, but otherwise have done pretty well. My question is I have bladder and intestinal discomfort constantly. I saw my dr. last week and was diagnosed with bladder and intestinal infections. I have been on antibiotics for 5 days and am having no relief. Is this discomfort (cramping and heaviness) unusual or a common side effect? Glad to find you all!

I'm one day ahead of you and have almost the same feelings. Let me know how you progress.

Thanks,
Karen

Thanks Karen for your reply. Nice to know I'm not the only one, however, I am sorry you feel this way, too. It's darn uncomfortable!

2 weeks post op - discomfort

Hi, Sorry about your discomfort. I'm 12 days post op and feeling pretty well. I get gas pains when I have to go, but otherwise am fine. I was wondering, did your doctor send you home from the hospital with antibiotics? Mine did and I think this is wise to prevent such infections. Let me know and I hope you feel better soon. Peggy

Please call your doctor if there is no relief after 5 days of antibiotic. They should be able to tell you what to expect with your type on infection.

2 weeks post op - discomfort

Hi Khensel and welcome to HysterSisters! I'm so glad you found us.

A lot of us experience problems with our bladders and bowels after surgery. The bladder, in particular, gets jostled about during the procedure and doesn't take kindly to it. The bowels seem to react to anesthesia and pain pills and slow down, causing gas and often times constipation. So you're not alone when it comes to having difficulties in those areas.

But, a bladder and bowel infection...wow! I bet you are darn uncomfortable, as you said . I agree with the others and think you should call your Dr. if you're not getting any relief after 5 days on the antibiotics. Also, you may want to eat some yogurt to fend off a possible yeast infection from taking the antibiotics. Keep us posted on how you're doing!

Best wishes and 's

2 weeks post op - discomfort

Thanks for all of the suggestions. After reading all the posts, I feel pretty normal for 2 1/2 weeks post-op. A couple have days have passed and I am finished with one of the antibiotics. I am eating lots of yogurt! Thanks for the tip.

I still have minor discomfort, but it has subsided a lot.

Karen (kaycee 10), how are you?

Same surgery date here too!

I had infection at the hospital. And you won't believe this, but I had no pain control
until about 4 in the afternoon! The pumps were broken and it took 3 pumps to
find one that finally worked and so I finally got pain med at 4, my surgery was
at 7am!! I thought it was just me! It was SOOOO awful! I hate that anyone
else had to go through that too.
Anyway, the next day I was running fever so they did IV antibiotics
(I was too out of it to remember which one though). I had lots of colon pain
as DR had to remove lots of bad stuff of my colon. That pain was TONS worse
than the actual surgery! I had a lot of pain on urinating and still have pain
when a bowel movement is coming - much like the pain of IBS (which I've had
from time to time). These pains are getting better with time. Oh, and
yes I had that awful heaviness too. Sometimes it felt like my vagina
was being pushed out!! (sorry, gross, I know!). But that feeling has subsided too.
I think overdoing it makes things worse, for sure. Everytime I do too much,
and I mean LOTS too much, I get the colon pain again and the bladder pain too.
So, I stay in bed and by morning it is better. Please stay in touch with your
Doctor and call if things get too bad. It's nice to meet a "same day" sister!
I look here often, so write if you'd like to sort of chat with each other!
Good luck and REST, REST, REST!!!!
I just noticed that you are in the Dallas area too - I was in St. Paul hospital,
where you there too?
