Haven't told anyone

Surgery scheduled for Oct 5th. Feel wierd about it. Just can't seem to tell my friends or family. My husband and kids know. Plus we are the host family for our sons senior class float, yeah we are building a float in our yard. Homecoming parade is Oct 15th. How laid up will I be, these floats are huge! Surgery just kinda happened and couldn't find another host family. Really starting to worry about surgery and what I will be like after.

Re: Haven't told anyone

I had trouble telling my family too but finally did and I'll tell ya what...it took a load off my mind! Something I thought would be so hard to do was actually nothing like I thought it would be - I told them and they got right behind me and became my support system.

I only told a couple of friends. One who happens to have just had surgery on her ovary, so I understand where you're coming from.

As far as the host family goes - you'll probably have to play a more "supervisory" role than a physical, hands-on one. If you have to have the float built there at your house then like plm said, ask for help from the other families and moms. Don't be a hero!

Take care of yourself first - everything else will fall into place.

Re: Haven't told anyone

That's my surgery date, too (Oct 5th)! I am being private about telling people for now. The day before my surgery, I am going to post it on my facebook status-for prayers that it goes well. I figure that is a good way to tell everyone and get it over with!

Re: Haven't told anyone

Completely relate. My date is Oct 2nd. It is embarrassing. I thought fibroids would shrink. Ugh. I had to tell my coworkers- but only told them I had a growth in my abdomen. My fibroid is not in my uterus! Just know prayers are there for you. To all my hystersisters- God bless you!

Re: Haven't told anyone

I also can relate. My surgery is Oct. 6th. I told my family and co-workers and 1 close friend last week. I work with all men, so that was weird. They don't know anything about hysterectomy and don't really want to know. I have made sure that when I made my announcement that they knew it wasn't cancer, but fibroids. I didn't want people to start worrying more than they should.
My period is supposed to start today and hasn't yet. I have been feeling unusually great the whole week since announcing. What do I do if I don't get a period for the first time ever (I'm 49) or it's not as heavy & painful as the others in the past 2 years? I sure hope I made the right decision - I'm a little scared too.

Re: Haven't told anyone

ditto Surgery on the 28th
I have told my children (they are the ones that pressured me to do something about my issues) and of course hubby, but don't feel too comfortable telling others. It does make me quiet around people though, as it's pretty much constantly on my mind.
Going to a bridal shower tonight for a girl I've known all her life, and my DD is maid of honor. I won't be at her wedding since it's Oct. 2, I know I should tell her (she needs the confirmation for reception count) but ...I really don't want to.

Re: Haven't told anyone

You have the right to tell people in your own time & way. It is good for people to know so that you have a support system. Like if your neighbors know what is going on they can keep an extra eye out for you. But if you don't want people to know that is ok too. As far as the float, I agree that you should be the supervisor only. You should not be bending or stretching or lifting for at least 6 weeks. Take care of yourself. You only get one chance to heal correctly. Best wishes to you!

Re: Haven't told anyone

Is the float-building going to create a lot of hammering, banging, power tool noise and chaos that could keep you from getting your rest? Are there going to be float-builders traipsing in and out of your house day after day? After your surgery you're going to need lots and lots of rest and sleep and you need a quiet, serene place to get that. Also, if you do have float builders coming in and out, keep in mind that each of them is going to bring germs in with them. After a hyst is NOT the time you want to get a cold or the flu or and infection in your surgical site. After even lap surgery supervising might not be such a good idea for at least the first 2 weeks.

Just some questions to think about. The most important thing for you to do after surgery is focus on healing YOU. That should be your first priority.
