liver nodules/hemangioma

Almost 10yrs. post op have done oral hrt in the early years, and the last few the patch either the 0.025 or 0.0375. Noticed alot more pain in the abdominal area, than usual dr. sent me for a scan showed a 2.2 hypodense nodule or hemangioma need to have further testing.

Did anyone have to stop hrt due to this issue? if so what are you using to feel well.

Re: liver nodules/hemangioma

Hi, Perhaps I can be of some help. I'm going through something similar.

I have a 10cm nodule on my liver. It was diagnosed as Focal Nodular Hyperplasia....it is a benign condition, and is also estrogen dependent. I was put on Marvelon birth control pills for 2 years to treat my severe endometriosis, but I started getting a pain under my right rib cage. I saw my doctor, and he sent me for many tests. A nuclear scan was done, and by that they were finally able to diagnose what type of tumor it was. Needless to say, I cannot be on any form of estrogen ever again....so after my hysterectomy, HRT is out. So far I'm ok, and menopause is tolerable. My doctor told me to also avoid estrogenic foods such as yams, soy, and flax. He told me that having the total hysterectomy would shrink the nodule, because there would be no more hormones to feed it. I don't see the hepatologist until January....so I'm not totally out of the woods yet. Sure hope he's right about the shrinking......I really don't want any more surgeries.

If you ever need to talk, feel free to message me. I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck to you.

Re: liver nodules/hemangioma

Hello Peppercat - I was interested in your posting. I had my hysterectomy and ovaries removed in 2006 but they also found FNH. I guess it was from taking the Pill when I was young. No-one told me the tumour shrinks if you have no HRT - I dont anyway.
I have been told it doesnt need treatment - but I guess you alway wonder...... Hope all goes well with you

Re: liver nodules/hemangioma

Had my hyster over a year ago. Everything was going well. Called my GYN to see about trying the hormone pills instead of the patch because the pill is so much cheaper. My nurse practitioner upped my hormones from Vivelle Dot .5mg to Estradiol 1mg pill. She thought I would need more in the pill so she changed the dose. After about 10 weeks on the pills, I had a night of vomiting and thought I just had a "bug", afterward I felt real weak and nausous. Finally it got some better, still didn't have much of a appetite and felt tired all the time. Then after about a week, I started hurting under my right rib where my gallbladder used to hurt me before it was removed. I went to my GP, had a ultrasound and a CT and bloodwork done. Bloodwork on liver was normal. Both tests suggested liver hemangiomas, one about 3cm, the other about 2cm. I am scheduled to see a gastro specialist to see if they have the same opinion of the tests. Going on 3 1/2 weeks now and symptoms are still here...side hurts, lack of appetite, nausea, tiredness, borderline anemic. Feels like the walking flu! I have stopped the hormone replacement for now until I see this Doc and my GYN again. Really hoping that I won't have to stop them forever. I don't like me at all without hormones. Of coarse, can't say that I like me much with these liver issues going on either.

Re: liver nodules/hemangioma

Well ladies,
I had my appointment with the hepatologist, and he confirmed what I already know: focal nodular hyperplasia. While I'm happy that I won't need anymore surgery, I am still a little bit confused about what he told me regarding estrogen NOT causing these tumors... In fact, he told me that nobody knows what causes these things! WHY then did these problems suddenly appear once I started taking Marvellon BC pills for my endo? There must be some connection you would think.

I am really worried because he contacted my gyn doctor and told her that I can be on HRT. The thing is....I DON'T WANT TO BE ON HRT!!! Her office called me this morning, and I now have a follow up appointment with her in February. I know she's going to try and talk me into going on that stuff, but I want no part of it. Even though the hepatologist says that estrogen does not cause these tumors, I still don't want to take any chances with my health. So far menopause is tolerable and I have no major issues to report (other than bone concerns because I am very slim). There is also a strong history of cancer on both sides of my family....so that is another worry. I don't know how I'm going to tell her I don't want to be on HRT!

Re: liver nodules/hemangioma

Hi Ladies

I had my hysterectomy in 2004 and have been on the patch ever since.
Last July I started getting a lot of stomach pains and feeling like I was coming down with the flu. I am unable to eat for days at a time and have been in so much pain that I have gone to the hospital a couple of times. (I've lost 25 lbs because of all this)
They did a CT scan and it showed that I have a nodule on the liver...one on left adrenal gland and a mysterious cyst in the left pelvic region.
I am nervous but hopeful all this will be nothing to be worried about.
Never considered going off the hormones, I'm not sure what I will do if it is recommended.
