surgery tomorrow - what should I bring for an overnight stay?

Hi,
I have a question that is not in the post-op section.
I'm only staying overnight after a laproscopic hysterectomy. I'm not sure if I need all the things you listed. Could you tell me if I should bring P.J.s and robe or should I just use their gown ? The nurse told me I would risk getting the P.J.s stained with blood ? I'm going to want to go home ASAP so can you let me know if anyone knows the least amount of things I should pack ?
Thank you, Linda

NewLinda - Look up the "Hints from Members" section. Lots of ideas there.

I'll tell you I used my I'd, lip balm, hand cream (and they probably had lotion) and glasses. That's it, plus panties to change into. They supply gown, robe for IV, toothbrush/paste, toiletries, slipper socks, mesh panties, pads, phone, TV, and meds. Wear in what you'll wear home, and slip on shoes. I didn't need my phone, never looked at my book, wouldn't want an Ipod. Some ladies say take mints but I wouldn't have used them. Basicly I brought a large handbag nearly empty. Why drag more? Well, you can, but you won't need it. I didn't need or want a seat belt pillow, either, but you can put one in the car in case. If you opt to bring your phone, bring the charger. That's it. Best wishes on your surgery and recovery.

Re: surgery tomorrow - what should I bring for an overnight stay?

I brought my asthma meds (requested by doctor as a just in case), by eyeglasses, change of underwear (they give you meshy one's,,,but I never had any bleeding so I went home in my own), change of socks, and my make up (I always feel a little better with make up on). I went to the hospital in loose fitting comfy clothes so I just wore them home.

The hospital will provide "jonnies" (great for the IV's) and wear one backwards for any walks. They also provide toothbrushes and toothpaste (not the greatest, but for a night and less packing works just fine), and lotion if needed (bring your own if you usually need it and have tolerance issues).

I didnt see any need to bring more than the basics,,,less to keep track of and lug around.

I did have my DH bring me some peppermint candies, as my throat was a bit over dry from being intebated and the anesthesia smells...the candies helped alot.

Good luck and prayers you have a FANTASTIC recovery as I have had.

Just wear loose fitting clothes to come home with. I just used lip balm. You will be very dry. They supply all the rest. You won't need PJ'S. Good Luck to you, and wish you a speedy recovery

Thanks NewLinda for asking that question! I go in on Monday for the same surgery and expect to stay overnight as well. Wasn't sure what to bring. This helps alot. Good luck with your visit to the castle!

Re: surgery tomorrow - what should I bring for an overnight stay?

With me for the same surgery i took extra large clothes and panties to wear home, slippers, my oversized robe, my own pads to wear home for bleeding, lip balm, and a small pillow to hold against my stomach. At home waiting for me i had books and magazines, extra remote batteries, bendy straws, pain med, and lots of water, sprite, and gatorade. I ate applesauce often. Good luck! We'll see you on the post op forum soon. Read up on hints from members.

Re: surgery tomorrow - what should I bring for an overnight stay?

Of the things I took, I used socks, panties, & pads. The hospital furnished pads, but they were the ones that require a belt. I also took a notepad & pens to make notes of questions for next time I saw Dr, & a list ofany phone calls or visitors. Hard candy was also helpful because water wouldn't quench my thirst. I wore clothes that I could wear home.

Anything else I took, like cell phone & charger, were because I was there 2 nights. A friend took a word puzzle book to me, which was great during & after my stay. On nights when I want to sleep, but my mind won't go for it, I work puzzles to wind down.

Re: surgery tomorrow - what should I bring for an overnight stay?

I had my surgery just 5 days ago. I would suggest wearing super comfy cloths so you can just wear them home, lip balm, halls breezers or something that can help numb your throat (your throat will be very dry and irritated), some type of slippers (the ones they give you are one size fits all they were horrible lol) everything else I took, I didn't even use. The hospital supplied all the toiletries I needed and I was just too groggy to care about reading, watching tv ect. Since I went home the next morning, I didn't need anything else. If my stay would have been longer, I would have definatly used more of my things.
Best wishes on your day at the castle.
