Pain Meds In Hospital

I don't do well at all with morphine. It makes me so sick at my stomach. They always ask if you are allergic to anything and I tell them yes to morphine. It's not that I'm allergic it's just that I have an adverse reaction by throwing up everywhere!! YUCK!

With my history of surgeries I know all to well what works best for me and that is dilaudid. I hate so bad to even tell docs this because as my mom says (she is an RN) they think you are a drug seeker. Dilaudid is so powerful and a class of heorin (sp?)

I'm having TVH, A&P repair and Monarc TOT bladder sling. In this case will I have pain pump or ask for pain meds as needed or what?

I'm going to tell the doc at my appt. this coming Tuesday about the morphine *allergy* but just don't know if I should go so far as to tell him what works best for me. He knows my surgical history and what all I have been through. I really don't think he will question my "expertise".

Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated!

Tell him what works & what doesn't. Dr gave me a pump with Demerol. Worked like a charm.

I agree, tell your dr what works and doesn't work for you. I have bad reactions to anything narcotic and always let them know in advance. That way everybody is prepared.

Re: Pain Meds In Hospital

You probably know your Dr well enough to know if you're OK telling him but I'd say in general if you say "morphine nauseates me but I've done OK with dilaudid" it is probably OK but if you say "I like dilaudid" that sounds drug seeking to them. I think you should tell them what works but word it such that they get the point of why. We shouldn't have to be so cautious but I agree with your mom that due to prejudices it is possible to be labelled. I didn't have a pain pump although I'd been told I would. The nurses gave me dilaudid when I asked for something for pain, then switched to Percocet in the morning. I had good pain control. Best wishes it all goes well for you.

Re: Pain Meds In Hospital

Thanks for all the advice! This definitely helps me a lot. I'll hit him with the "no morphine" and go from there. Maybe I will be lucky and he will just say dilaudid. If not, I'll get it in with well this is what they have used in the past.

I worry too much!

Things got better after the urodynamics test was over. Now I'm building up to pre-op. LOL Wanna make sure all bases are covered and questions asked, ya' know.
