Scared to death

Hi all, I've been lurking here for a few weeks thinking that if I didn't post anything I wouldn't have to have the surgery. No luck, I'm scheduled for Dec. 16 and I am TERRIFIED. I've never had surgery of any kind in all my 42 years. I have a fairly large fibroid that is causing heavy bleeding and two smaller ones that are apparently just giving the larger one moral support. I recently moved to my current location so I don't know my doc or the hospital as well as I would like, although my doc seems wonderful. Doc said it was going to be a LSH and probably be about a 2 1/2-3 hour surgery. This seems so long to me, I'm just so scared I won't wake up.

Re: Scared to death

I am with you. I am scheduled for Nov 8th, but I found out about it the middle of September. The best thing you can do is educate yourself, and this site is great for that. It is also great for support! I was glad to find I was not the only one who was terrified and had never had any surgery before. I am having a TLH and was told it should be around 2 hours. Good thing is, I am told that when you are under anesthesia, you have no idea about time.
Good luck and best wishes to you!

Re: Scared to death

I am scheduled for Nov 19th surgery and feel your fear. I have had issues with anesthsia in the past so I was very uneasy with this. I shared my concerns with my doctor and he offered me the option of a spinal block or epidural - never had either of those before, so I don't know if those options eased my mind or created more uncertainty.

Re: Scared to death

Sandrar, I asked if I could have an epidural/spinal but doc said no because I would be tilted with my head down and legs up. A hysterectomy on my head for 3 hours, just something else to worry about. LOL

Re: Scared to death

It's great that you're here and have decided to post! So often by putting our fears into words, and sharing with others in a similar circumstance, our fears lessen.

Breath deep, and know that there are many women here to share with and hear from.

If you can, try to focus on the things that are within your control, and do your best not to dwell on the things that are outside your control. You can learn as much as possible about the procedure that is recommended to you, and make sure you get as many questions as possible answered by your doctor. There is a ton of information you can read if you go to the options on the blue bar at the top of the page, as well as the Resources tab at the top right corner.

If you are having doubts or don't feel your new doctor is answering your questions sufficiently - or even if you ARE comfortable with your doctor - a second opinion is always a great way to help give you peace of mind that you feel fully confidant about your doctor and the type of surgery you opt for.

Keep sharing those things that are keeping you up at night so that we can try to rid you of as many fears as possible, and answer your questions as best we can!
