Surgery 12/11 for TVT sling removal (with SF Bay specialist)

Hi all,

It's been a long road to get to this point but I've finally got a date to get this monster inside me removed.

I had surgery January 2009 for repair of a 3rd degree rectocele and to place an Advantage TVT suburethral mesh sling. Within a few weeks of surgery I had mesh erosion from the sling and have lived with it for nearly two years, afraid to have the surgery to repair it beause of not knowing who to trust to do the surgery and fear of making an already bad situation worse.

After much procrastinating and foot dragging I've found a doctor who I believe is one of the top female pelvic reconstruction specialists in the country to do the surgery. This doctor is in the San Francisco Bay Area.

At my consultation appointment with the surgeon in September he shared with me that he's seen many, many cases like mine and has, by default, become an expert in the removal of mesh slings. Because of what he's seen in his own patients he has become adamantly opposed to the use of suburethral slings and, in fact, lectures against their use. He told my husband and I that he feels mesh slings should be banned and hopes someday they are. He shared some very telling information with us from the FDA website that backs up his concerns and position on the matter.

We are traveling 200 miles round trip for this surgery because we want only the best and because there are no doctors in our area with the skill and experience to take on this removal. It is a delicate and painstaking surgery that should only be done by the most experienced physicians IMHO.

My surgery will be to remove the sling, revise and repair my rectocele scar which has essentially closed off my vagina and to suspend my bladder. Hopefully my hospital stay will be just 24 hours and I will be coming home with a catheter until my first post op visit 12/16.

I wish I had never allowed this mesh sling to be put in. I've learned so much negative information about mesh slings since my surgery that it makes my head spin. If I'd known then what I know now I would never have allowed my doc to put the sling in.

Through my own experience I urge everyone considering one of these suburethral slings to do your homework, ask a lot of questions, get second and third opinions and find a doctor that can correct your urinary incontinence WITHOUT using a mesh sling (it CAN be done)

Happy Thanksgiving,
Debbie

Thank you for your post. I had a total vag. Hyst.bladder repair, on the 11th. My dr. Was going to put a sling in but instead I think my bladder tore or something. The dr. Was not able to put in the sling for some reason. I have not been back to see the dr yet I will ask him then. I have had to keep my catheter in for two weeks yuck. After reading your post I think maybe I am glad.

Debbie,

I have had 3 more surgeries since my prolift bladder mesh was placed. It has been a nightmare! I am basically asexual. Just turned 50 and was in great shape and had a wonderful love life with my husband of 28yrs. I recently went to UCLA to a pelvic specialist there. He is very experienced in mesh removal. He says it shouldn't me used either. I had complications with removal, the "arms" of the wicked device were badly infected deep in my rt groin. I was in the hospital for 3 and 1/2 days and lost a lot of blood. I don't mean to scar you, but mesh removal is very delicate surgery. I had an awesome surgeon. I am now a little over 6wks post-op, the recovery has been difficult, but so glad the stuff is out of me. It should be banned. The companies pushing this stuff to doctors who can't think for themselves, should be fined for ruining so many women's health. If it had of been described to me in detail, I would have said Not in My Body! Idiots!! Before surgery I had a translabial ultrasound that showed where the remaining mesh was. I also had a pelvic MRI for prolapse that showed the extent of my bladder prolapse. I wasn't able to have the repairs with my own tissue due to all the infection. The mesh had been inside me a year, just brewing infection! I go back for follow-up Dec 14th. I have to fly many miles to LA, I live on the East Coast. It has been worth it. I feel like I may have a chance at getting my life back. Good luck to you and my prayers are with you.

Best wishes. My prayers go with you. I agree women should be told about the risks etc. I can not believe they are still doing this kind of repair. Let us know how it goes.

Re: Surgery 12/11 for TVT sling removal (with SF Bay specialist)

I want to say thank you to all that have responded to my post regarding upcoming surgery. Your encouragement and support mean a lot to me.

Sghall: no worries, you haven't scared me. I am so happy for you that things are finally turning around and you feel as if you can see light at the end of the tunnel. It's a shame, criminal even, that you've been put through the nightmare of sling placement and then removal. I get really angry every time I learn of another woman who has been harmed by medical mesh in some way. There needs to be an end to the madness.

I am familiar with the doctors you are seeing at UCLA. I appreciate your words of caution. I do, however, have utmost confidence in the doctor I've chosen to do the removal surgery. He has done hundreds of them successfully and is just as angered as you and I are that the mesh continues to be used and women continue to be harmed. My surgeon is a renowned pelvic reconstruction specialist who has become specialized in removing suburethral slings simply because of the number of women who come to him in the same shape you and I are in. He knows the surgery is technically challenging and delicate. I feel I am in great hands.

Again, thank you to everyone for your kind words. They help me get through the tense days leading up to surgery which is always the worst time for me.

I wish health and healing to all.

Re: Surgery 12/11 for TVT sling removal (with SF Bay specialist)

I am so glad I am in good company!

I had prolift mesh both anterior and posterior put in 2005,
two erosions, with two revsion surgeries, now with ongoing pelvic pain that just won't go away.

I wonder if all the mesh products for this type of diagnoses will be recalled eventually?
I am seriously afraid the doc will say I have to have the mesh taken out. I am headed back to the gyn who put the mesh in and see what he sees/feels on the exam. The thought of another surgery scares me to death!!!

my thoughts and prayers are with all of us who suffer with this ongoing issue.
hand in there everyone!

I need my tvto sling taken out also. I have to choose between an excision where they cut just part of it or going to ucla.where I have heard he may be able.to remove it all safely. Has anyone had it taken out all the way would love your stories. This has been a nightmare.

Hello,
I would like the names of the doctors who are doing mesh removal in the Bay Area (where I live) and UCLA. (please respond privately with names). I'm considering having an procedure called Elevate which is mesh but a newer kind. Now I am scared. Has anyone had it done?
Thanks,
Ginko
