When you had your blood work done did they check your ferratin levels? because if these are low then you need to increase the ferratin in the cell to then increase the iron compound of the blood cell. Ferratin is whats needed to help bind the iron to the red cell in the first place and as I say if thats low then it wont be able to pick the iron up and so that maybe where the problem lies! Its a bit like the carrot on a stick with the donkey following so to speak! When you see your haematologist ask whether the ferratin levels are being checked and there may lie your answer. If this is the case then the only way to increase the ferratin level is to have high doses of iron and rest and eventually the ferratin and then the iron levels will restore themselves. I hope that makes sense and has helped? p.s also after major surgery you always become a little anaemic or more than you were, and also the ferratin level will fall as a direct response to having to work harder at restoring the cells iron.
