Allergic reaction to surgery prep

I had incisional hernia repair last Tuesday (caused by hysterectomy in August). Thursday I developed a red itchy belly (midriff and entire belly) where they used a blue surgery prep. The doctor said to take benedryl - but it is not helping (only making me dizzy). Did anyone else get this? How long did it last? It's worse than the surgery pain!

Re: Allergic reaction to surgery prep

I have a lot of allergic reactions to things and would call the doc and tell him it isn't helping. They may need to see you to find something that will help. Let them know how uncomfortable you are. Sending hugs

It spread to my breasts and back and there are now bumps too. Think I'm going to the urgent care doc today...

Re: Allergic reaction to surgery prep

Definitely! It's apparently a bad drug allergy - they gave me four prescriptions and said to come back Monday. It had spread to most of my body by the time I started the meds.

Re: Allergic reaction to surgery prep

Four weeks after my surgery my incisions turned flaming red and itched like crazy! Turns out that it was a topical yeast infection, the surgeon said that she is seeing more and more cases like this. She thinks that it has something to do with a combination of all the anti biotics that they give via the IV prior & after the surgery coupled with the new type of sutures. I was given 3 doses of Diflucan and ended up only needing to take two doses, basically healed in four days. You might want to ask if the Doc thinks it's a yeast infection? Good luck & I wish you well.

Re: Allergic reaction to surgery prep

Oh my gosh! That's interesting. My lips were on fire for six weeks after my hysterectomy (and six antibiotics) and the dermatologist's nurse kept having me try different things before I finally saw the doctor and it was a yeast infection - cleared up 9 hours later. Then I had to take two more antibiotics last month and it came back - so I took the difulcan again. So yesterday when I saw the doctor he prescribed an antibiotic and difulcan. But the pharmacy did not have the difulcan so I have to go back tomorrow.

I do think this is more like the allergy I had to penicillin many years ago - perfectly matches that. My entire midsection is bright red, swollen, hot to the touch, and itchy - like a giant bee sting - only covers my breasts, belly, back, and top of legs.

Thanks so much - this is something that needs to be talked about more!

Re: Allergic reaction to surgery prep

I am so sorry that you are still having the itchiness. It can be so miserable if you have a reaction to something that causes the itchiness and hives. I know how uncomfortable it can be
After my hysterectomy, they made a huge mistake and had latex gloves (I am allergic to Latex) in the room. The nurses and aides were wearing them and after I left the hospital I suddenly was itching like crazy in my genital area. When I went to my docs office she said it looked like an allergic response and that was when she asked if there was something they used in hospital. The good news was we figured it out but the bad news was that the medicine took several days to work and boy was I uncomfortable. Oh and then to top it off, a week later ended up with a yeast infection and was itching again. I was ready to scream when that happened.
Sending hugs and best wishes. Hopefully the medicine will help you real soon so you feel better.

Re: Allergic reaction to surgery prep

It's been four days - two days on prednisone - and I'm still red with on my chest, belly, back, and upper legs - and have hives on the lower part of it including right next to my 3 inch incision. Luckily they gave me anti-itching medicine that's working. I had something like this with penicillin years ago - but did not last this long! Lucky for me it stops on my pubic hair line... lol.
