Holes everywhere - just like Swiss cheese!

I was scheduled for a LAVH on Dec 9th. I had been told that should things not go "according to plan" and they found something that required further work or investigation, I was to get a TAH. I woke from the op hurting everywhere and very doppy so I did not really listen to what was being said. When I came too. First thing I thought was "shoulder pain - must have gone through with the LAVH" as the gas pain often shows in the shoulder area. Well I was right and wrong at the same time. Near the end of my LAVH, they realized the extent of the endo and the adhesions fixing my uterus to my bowel required me to have a TAH. I now have holes from the lap on my belly, an 8 inch incision at my bikini line and what they told me was extensive reconstruction of the vaginal cuff from removal of affected cervical tissue.

Has anyone else had this happen where they have to contend to the effects of a LAVH and TAH at the same time? The surgeons have told me it will take longer for me to get back on track. Any feedback from anyone with a similar situation? Feeling like Swiss cheese!

Re: Holes everywhere - just like Swiss cheese!

Hi! I had a LAVH on Aug 31. The night of Aug 2 I had emergency surgery to remove a hematoma that was growing on my bladder due to a nick to a vein near my bladder that happened during the LAVH. I was bleeding internally. SO - that 2nd surgery left me with a 6 inch bikini line incision, a drain to remove residual blood and gunk from my abdomen, and a 4 night hospital stay. Not what I expected!

I was also told the 2nd surgery was going to set me back. It did but not for as long as I thought it would. My biggest issue was anemia. I was back at work after being home for 4 weeks. It took me about 8 or 9 weeks to get over bladder and bowel spasms, and I had spotting/discharge for awhile (8 weeks).

I pretty much felt out of it for the first week at home, and then slowly felt like I returned to the land of the living. I did tire easier and was frustrated because of the incision I couldn't lift things as soon as I would have wanted too - also, walking or sitting for too long wasn't comfortable.

I'm now 3 months out and feeling for the most part like a totally new person. I still have to be very careful about lifting, walking too quickly - I will feel sore at my incision site if I do.

One of the hardest parts of recovery was being patient- there were days when I felt like I could do a lot - but the next day I felt like it was day 1 again. So take it easy, and take it slowly - listen to your body. Best of luck to you! Hugs
