Carbanated drinks?

I am a big coke drinker. After surgery will I be able to drink soda?

Re: Carbanated drinks?

I did not just to avoid bloating and gassy feeling. Did not want any either. Once the first couple of days are over it will probably be okay. I did hear it sometimes helps some women for nausea?

Re: Carbanated drinks?

I drink seltzer all the time. I drank ginger ale the day of surgery and drank my usual flood of seltzer afterwards, with no ill effects (it did make me burp more, which made me feel better rather than worse).

Re: Carbanated drinks?

I also am a soda drinker, although my drink of choice is pepsi
I had no problems at all with it, but let that be the least of your worries.

Oddly enough, since we're on this topic, I didn't have a drop of coffee the whole time I was home recovering, and when I went back to work, I couldn't stand it. After 3 months, I'm slowly getting back to it, but not nearly like before.

Re: Carbanated drinks?

When I had the call from the hospital just before surgery I was talking with the nurse about my caffine addiction. She said to ask for a Pepsi as soon as I got to my room and keep getting them. They helped hold off the caffeinewithdrawal headache, helped clear the yukky taste out of my mouth from the drugs, helped with dry mouth and gave me an additional source of fluids.

Re: Carbanated drinks?

I'm also a Coke drinker. There was actually a small can of Coke on the tray with my first meal at the hospital. I drank Coke the first couple of days just fine, but then on day 5 or 6 I suddenly had problems processing the gas and bloating from the carbonation. This only lasted about 2 days though. I can drink Coke without problems now.

Re: Carbanated drinks?

I placed a couple of open cans of ginger ale in the fridge in order to keep it cold - but let it become flat. I was not able to drink carbinated drinks for quite awhile.

My nurses told me the carbonated beverages help to move gas out, thereby improving how you feel. Also, sucking on hard candies is beneficial, I was told.

Re: Carbanated drinks?

I had TAH and I wasn't allowed to drink or eat anything other than clear fluids which meant cleat broth and jelly and black tea or coffee until I passed wind! Which was over 24 hours post op. They said it had something to so with moving my bowels around during the surgery. Once. The event happened I was free to eat or drink what I wished!

Re: Carbanated drinks?

The nurses at both of my Castles (I had two hysterectomy related surgeries at different hospitals in the last month) both gave me Diet Coke. They said nothing wrong with it and not only did it help encourage moving the gas and burping it out, it was better to have my caffeine if I was a junkie than to not have it. Too bad neither had Diet Dr Pepper.

As a note, I have been down to just one can OR LESS a day ever since the surgery because I didn't want to add more gas and then finally because it just wasn't 'needed' like before. Before that, I drank 1 liter a day. I like that. Another bonus of the experience.
