Bright Blood?

Hi all! I hope someone can help me. I was told on discharge today that I should call my doctor if I have any bright red vaginal bleeding. I got home and realized most of the blood, even in the hospital which they saw, was bright by my standards.

Also, does it require that there be quite a lot of bright red blood or is spotting bright red enough to warrant a call to the doctor.

I'm just very scared because recovery has been so easy so far and I just don't want to have something be wrong now! Help!

Re: Bright Blood?

Hi Sucre! Here's an article with some general guidelines on Post Op Bleeding. As the article states, spotting is generally not something to worry too much about in the early stages of recovery, and many of us experience this when we overdo it in the early stages. The guideline for when to call the doctor is if you are soaking an entire pad in a fairly short period of time (an hour or so)....however if you are feeling really concerned then it's best to err on the side of caution and all your doctor.

I think many of us also become accustomed to a darker than normal color of blood ("old" blood), closer to brown than red? Bright red might look more pinkish than red - so this is a good question to double check with your doctor about when you have a chance (an easy question to ask their receptionist over the phone, even, if it gives you comfort).

Congratulations on a successful surgery and an excellent recovery so far! Pace yourself for the long haul, be patient and kind to yourself, and REST, REST, REST! I wish you a wonderful, healthy 2011!

Re: Bright Blood?

Just talked to the doctor on call. My post-op instructions from the hospital were "misleading" as she put it. Apparently they're not concerned about spotting or even normal period-like bleeding, only if you're bleeding through a pad an hour. So, no worries! Feeling very relieved.

Thank you, Fire, for your response, though. It did make me feel better.
