02-14-2011 The day I'm having my Hysterectomy, SCARED!
I'm scheduled for my hysterectomy Feb 14th. I'm so terrified...
Here's my story and I'll try and keep it short but I doubt that will happen lol...
When I was 23 I was told I didn't ovulate by a endocrinologist. I was there for heart trouble so when she told me that I was surprised but already had two children so it didn't bother me. She did ask me if i wanted to find out why but I said no, I didn't want anymore children so I was fine with that. For years I never had a "normal period" It was always 5-7 days earlier than the month before, heavy one month light the next, lasting 3 to 8 days and always stopping for 24 hours during the cycle, then start back up again. Some cramping but never anything too painful. Now at 39/40 years old things have changed.
The last 7 or 8 months have been off the charts! In Sept 2010, my period lasted from one cycle to the next. The weird thing was it was a watery blood tinged discharge. I would only have it in the morning when I got up. Then when I would go to the bathroom and wipe it would be there. I only had to wear a panty liner and if I remember right, there was a strong "odor" that was unusual. Then the cycles after that were "normal" as my normal could be. Last month I experienced something I never did before. A week before my period started, I had awful pain in my left side that went from front to back, thought for sure it was a kidney stone. That pain stopped that night and I started my period about a week later. It was pretty heavy for a few hours on day 2 or 3 and then just stopped. I started to cramp with one constant cramp that just kept getting stronger and stronger. I noticed I stopped bleeding and that was really odd because a couple of hours before it was pretty heavy. Anyway, the pain got that bad that i started shaking, couldn't stand and started to panic. I quick drew up a hot bath and within 5 minutes of sitting in it, a huge release of blood came out. I stood up and another huge amount came out. Seemed like "something" was blocking the flow. But I looked in the water and there was nothing there. So I called a gyno my friend highly suggested and was seen asap. She ordered an ultrasound and said when I came back she would do a endometrial biopsy. Well I went back the next day and she told me that this is what they found... 2 fibroids in my uterus. Two cyst's on my left ovary. One of them was nothing to worry about but the other one she said was "complex". She also did the endometrial biopsy. Let me just say, that was the most painful thing I have experienced in years!!! I could not believe the pain. She used something like a plunger? Wasn't very big. Anyway, she said she was positive that i had endometriosis in my uterine wall with all the pain I had when she took the biopsy. Anyway, as long as that biopsy comes back "normal" she will do the hysterectomy. She will leave my right ovary and try and save as much of the left one as possible.
I'm just scared that since I didn't ovulate for many years this could increase my cancer risk. I never really took BCP through the years. Always used condoms or another method. My mom had cervical cancer and my grandmother had colon cancer. I also had a polyp removed during a colonoscopy a few years back and was told it was the kind that if left undetected would have turned into cancer. I was maybe 30ish when I had it done and have to get one every 3-5 years to keep an eye on things.
I'm sorry this is so long and so detailed and my spelling is out to lunch lol! I'm just nervous and scared. I don't know much about all this yet so I'm reading the boards to learn. She is going to do the De Vinci procedure, Ans so far that seems like the best way to go. I would love to hear of any input or thoughts anyone has on my symptoms. I will post in the introduce yourself forums here after bit... But thank you all in advance

Sounds like you're pretty 'seasoned' with the surgeries...shouldn't be too bad for ya!
I had DaVinci and it was good for me. I had very little pain and feel that I have progressed pretty good.
Will say a pray for you

Re: 02-14-2011 The day I'm having my Hysterectomy, SCARED!
I am delighted with the results of my daVinci surgery (that was just over two months ago). My four little incisions are healing nicely. I no longer have pain, periods or period pain! I did a lot of worrying beforehand. I recommend you read as many of the stories specifically about daVinci as you can. You'll learn a lot about what to expect. Then prepare in a manner best for yourself: clean, write a journal, cook for the freezer, pamper yourself at the salon, whatever.
It really is amazing: they put you out in the OR (and the CRNA who was with me was incredibly understanding and confident all would be fine) and you go from muttering about who loves you to waking up in the recovery room being told it is all over! You'll be thirsty, your throat might be sore - and you won't be able to get out of bed easily or comfortably for a few days...but it isn't horrible, by any means. Really, for me the waiting to go the Castle (five weeks) was the worst part - and I am delighted with how I feel now.
I am thankful I had a talented daVinci surgeon. Sisters who have open hysterectomies generally have less easy recoveries.
Think of your date in the OR on Valentine's Day as doing something for yourself. After 3-4 weeks, you'll be glad you had it done. You can make plans to wear white skirts this Spring and happily skip the feminine hygiene aisle when shopping.
