Many Large multiple fibroids and a 5 month size enlarged uterus

Hi, I'm new here, what a great site, thanks to all who contribute. Have been diagnosed re many 7 to 8 cm fibroids, one pedunculated, and a significantly enlarged uterus, about 5 month pregnancy size, for the last 3 years. Have continued without anything but an IUD and have been very physically active for the last 3 years, living with them. I also have two 4cm cysts on my right ovary. They seem to continue to be growing, and while I am not in pain, the is pressure constantly on my bladder and often discomfort. both gynecologist opinions are abdominal surgery and this is my hunch too, keeping ovaries if possible. I would welcome any comments of support, similar stories of women who have had abdominal hysterectomy, and also what to expect after in regard to playing sport, dancing, cycling, running etc as this is a big and enjoyable part of my life, thanks in advancd

Re: Many Large multiple fibroids and a 5 month size enlarged uterus

I also lived with multiple large fibroids and a 5-month sized uterus. I did not have the bleeding that many women have with fibroids and I guess that was the reason I lived with them for as long as I did (several years). Last year, I decided that I could not go on living like this (pressure and pain) and made the decision with my gynecologist to do something about it. My ultrasound showed my largest fibroid to be 10 cm. My entire uterus was involved and some of the fibroids were calcified. My doctor decided and I agreed to try to shrink the fibroids pre-op with Zoladex. I was getting these injections monthly for 4 months. My doctor was hoping that the fibroids would shrink enough to even possibly doing a vaginal hysterectomy. However, at the end of 4 months the fibroids did not shrink so my doctor decided that I would have to have a total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) with possible removal of my ovaries. I had my surgery on 1/17/11 and had uterus and cervix removed, kept both ovaries. I am 6 weeks post op and I feel so much better. I was physically active before and I am now starting to get back into my activities. You do need the time to truly recover (in my case 6 weeks) and to be cleared by your doctor for all activities. I am exercising and dancing already. I am very pleased with my flat and toned stomach. It is like welcome back after all this time. I wish I had taken care of this problem sooner. By the way, no more periods, yay! Best wishes to you.

Re: Many Large multiple fibroids and a 5 month size enlarged uterus

Hi Astrana, thanks this is really useful...and so happy for you with your great outcomes and dancing.Yeah!
I'm in two minds as really it doesn't stop me doing 40km cycles or an hour of dancing etc...nor any of my work...my quality of life does not seem diminished enough to warrant a TAH right now, sooner or later is my dilemma...especially as I don't Experience pain and I don't have any bleeding. Any light to shed on this re how long to wait, and if there are additional risks in waiting another year or two, most welcome...at the moment learning and digesting ...thanks and good luck
