Constipated...are laxatives okay to take?

I'm six days post-op. The doctor told me to take stool softeners, which I have been doing. I had one bowel movement yesterday, and it felt like someone was ripping my incision open (it's fine of course). I'm continuing to take the stool softeners on a daily basis. I'm drinking lots of water and eating prunes and broccoli. I'm so very constipated right now and very uncomfortable. It's Saturday night so I obviously can't call my doctor. What I'm wondering is if it's safe to take a laxative? The meds I'm on are Percocet, Motrin 800, and Valium.

Re: Constipated...are laxatives okay to take?

Most doctors have a service. You can call. If your one BM hurt and felt as if stitches ripped, I don't know if you want to risk a laxative without your doctor thinking through the possibilities. With a laxative you won't have any control over your bowels.

It just takes time for your intestines to figure things out. Perhaps you are feeling gas? Tried Gas X? I'd call the doctor.

Once I hit 6 days, I took one dose of Miralax (already taking softners and chewable fibre tabs) It got things moving. How many softeners are you taking?

I used an emema 3 days post-op due to constipation and pressure. Stoll softener and laxatives didn't work. What a wonderful thing the enema was! I would do it again in an instant.

It's safe to take a NONSTIMULANT laxative. Just be sure it says nonstimulant on the label.

I can't say enough how much I love, love, love Miralax! I don't know if it is a non-stimulant laxative, but I used it to prep for a colonoscopy and I used it this week post-op and it is the most gentle laxative I've ever taken. I did call my doctor's office before I took it, though.

I have never tried miralax- but I have heard good things. My doctor wrote me a RX for Senna Plus, whis is a stool softener/mild laxative combo.. definitely non-stimulating. I took it twice a day- and it sure helped!! I believe you can get it over the counter too.

Re: Constipated...are laxatives okay to take?

I've been taking a stool softener, Miralax, Metamucil, eating tons of fruits (not bananas), veggies, avoiding anything constipating, etc. I'm 11 days post op and have yet to have a BM. My doctor says it will happen and to keep doing what I'm doing, but I'm losing faith. I have a bottle of mag citrate in my fridge that I'm so tempted to drink part of, but I'm afraid to do it.

Re: Constipated...are laxatives okay to take?

I took one exlax pill and yes I believe it says non stimulant laxative at like 5 am in the morning, nothing happened, then took one more at noon. Box said adults one to two. I had comfortable soft BMs by the late afternoon. I was also taking stool softeners one every twelve hours per my presciption but that alone resulted in nothing. However I had also stopped taking my oxy altogether about 12 hours before BM so not sure if that was helping or not.
