Tips for mantaining healthy bones

I am 43 and would like to hear from those not doing HRT, how you keep your bones strong.

Do you get a bone density test every year ?

Re: Tips for mantaining healthy bones

I get a bone density test every 2 or 3 years. I take calcium with D and do weight bearing exercise like walking 4 times a week. I have some bone loss, but I think it is not as bad as it was. I cannot take the prescription drugs for it because it bothers my stomach.

Re: Tips for mantaining healthy bones

Since My hyst was only a few months ago, my Dr hasn't mentioned a bone density scan. I had a baseline at my 40th birthday physical. It will probably be mentioned at my 50th, next time.

My Dr has been proactive about osteoporosis since I met him 18 years ago. He recommends weight bearing exercise, calcium & vitamin D supplements. I also try to keep soda intake low because sodas can leach some calcium from the bones & turn it into kidney stones. Otherwise, general health rules fall into place.

Re: Tips for mantaining healthy bones

I was wondering about this also. I'm 58, just went for my second bone density test because Mom has severe osteoporosis (I go every 2 years, unless the doctor finds something). The nurse who did my bone density test seemed appalled that I didn't take estrogen after my TAH. However, Mom had breast cancer, so I don't want the hormone risk. I didn't know about soda leaching calcium. I do drink lots of soda (too much), so I'll check on that.
