My experience...

Well....I've never done anything in a chat room or any type of forum....so this is my first.
I've just had a partial vh (3 weeks ago). I have been at this site before my surgery looking for alot of things (understanding, answers, etc.) and I got got what I was looking for. I read over alot of accounts of different experiences which were very helpful ! Many of the concerns prompted me to ask more questions of my doctor. I definitely suggest asking as many questions as you can, even if you think that it's a "silly" question.
I'm 35 and had 4 uterine fibroids larger than golf balls and several more the size of grapes. For most of my adult life I have been on birth control, therefore my cycle was very regular. I was one of the lucky ones. My cycle was extremely light and lasted 3-4 days with little to no discomfort. About 6 months ago, things changed......drastically. By the month before my surgery, I was extremely heavy (clotting, etc.), 18 - 22 days and major cramping. My fibroids wre growing rapidly.
My first few days after surgery were very uncomfortable (especially the 2 days after). From there on it got slightly better. I had 2 weeks off work, where I tried to nothing but rest but boredom tends to get the best of you. I'm not really into the typical daytime tv, so passing the time was challenging. Needless to say, at my two week post op appointment, I found out that I had "over done it"......a few too many trips to the store, too much cleaning up, and gardening (which was probably my most detrimental chore). The problem was, I would end up taking the pain meds and think that I felt ok to do those things. PLEASE....listen to your doc and just REST !!
Now at 3 1/2 weeks post op, everything is considerably better. I was able to prepare a Turkey Day dinner without getting completely exhausted. I still have to actively remember to take time for my self. I'm glad that I have the next 3 days off work to hopefully relax !!
My advise.........ask alot of questions of your doctor, do everything that he/she says, relax and let those that love you take care of you for as long as you need it. Don't try to be a superhero !!!

My experience...

Hi Shelley, thanks for posting and giving "warning" to others. It is so important to follow post-op instructions from our Drs. to avoid complications.

It can be difficult to rest as much as we should, but there is only one chance to heal properly from this surgery, and each of us is worth it!

I hope that the rest of your recovery goes smoothly for you.

Best wishes and 's
