Talking - Everything is going great Everything is going great

Hi, I had made my decision to have surgery due to multiple large fibroids. It was an elective surgery and since i did not want any children and had asked previously to have my uterus removed five years prior I was all for it. I did have the da Vinci procedure (laparoscopic) removal. My doctor was very experienced so that was reassuring and he had4.5 stars out of 5 on a review website, not to mention he was my regular ogn doctors husband. Prior to my surgery I did refer to the hystersisters website and it gave me a lot of insite into the aftercare that made my recovery so much easier. The biggest obstacle was maintaining regular bowel movements and keeping gas to a minimum. I used multiple blogs and put together combinations of advice it all worked great. Now for the procedure...I went in April 4th in the am and reported to the pre-op area. I was actually put out in the pre-op area so I was very happy about that since I was not in the mood to participate much. The next thing i remember is coming too and my body was experiencing tremors and I was mumbling something, "combative", which no one understood. I was only aware for a few seconds having tremors before they sedated me because I do remember the nurse having to hold me down...that is how bad I was shaking. It was almost as if my mind was wondering what my body was doing. The next time I came too was in the recovery when my two coworkers were touching my shoulder and I opened one eye and smiled. They had me repeat something we say on the job and that is how they knew I was okay and they left shortly thereafter because i was in condition to entertain. I had other visitors but I can not really remember them visiting. It took them some time to get me to my room which was in the maternity ward...it was actually nice and quiet. I think my surgery was done at about noon and I was in my room at about 6pm or so. I was a late bloomer... : ) I was pretty strong after surgery since the nurses compliments me on how well I moved from one bed to another. I stayed in the bed the next day until about 2pm at which time they took out my catheter. I was on iv drip for pain which they also took out at about this time. i had visitors which I remembered. I got up and hobbled to the bathroom in very little pain and urinated and they had me sit in the chair for a bit. i urinated two more times and then they let me rest in the bed again. My doctor came by at about 5 and gave me a thumbs up and after dinner I was able to go home. I had five incisions...one above the belly button, two a little lower than the belly button torwards the outer pelvic area and two above the belly button just to the right and left of the belley button...if you connected the dots it would be an M. Worst part was I got the percocet but they didn't put a doasge so it delayed me from getting them, not that I needed them yet. The first night home was restless but I took the pain meds and drank everything I could to ensure bowel movements came easy. Over the next few days, my stomach was not cooperative so small meals were a must and mostly soft foods that didn't cause gas. I always took two gas ex before going to bed because the gas was the worst in the morning. It made a huge difference to take the gas ex at night. I had my first check up at day three...went good. My next check up was a week later and my doctor had given me a thumbs up to fly as long as I got up and walked every hour on the plane. No problems with changes in elevation for me. I was out of town six days and loved it but I took it very easy. i always wore sweat pants too. I had another check up when I got back because I felt a lump (hoping it wasnt herniated) it was scare tissue. I also had him clip a scab away since it was attached to a stitch poking out of the skin. Stitched did poke through the skin but eventually fell away. Even at 5 weeks I have stitching poking out. I had my final check up on May 10th and he said everything looks great. I should be okay at work but will avoid strenuous activity. I have rested the entire time and will have had six weeks off from work when I go back. The only thing I feel at this point is the occasional pulling if I twist or twinges if I try to lift too much weight. It is very important not to push oneslef physically for a few months after this surgery because I have read a lot about post op hernias. Even though I look good on the outside, my insides are still healing. My surgery involved just the removal of my uterus. he left in my cervix and ovaries. I wanted it to be minimal and since my pap smears have always been normal there was no concern in removing it plus I didn't want any prolapse issues. I kept my ovaries for their hormonal value because I am only 40 and have no desire to take hormones or go through menopause. If it ain't broke don't fix it...ovaries good check...cervix good check...uterus good...nope...gotta go. At five weeks I feel pretty good...I also went on a driving road trip from Ny to Detroit and back again but took it in short runs...maybe 5 hours a day with the hourly break and leg stretches.
