Has anyone tried ablation for endo period pain?

I know it won't address my actual endometriosis, but I'm wondering if it could at least help with the additional intense pain of periods? I'm scheduled for a Da Vinci hysterectomy with removal of ovaries but after reading up on this site and others I'm thinking twice. So scary! I don't want to trade one problem for another by going into surgical menopause. So I'm trying to come up with other ways to make this more bearable and avoid the hysterectomy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!! And good luck to everyone out there dealing with the many varied problems that life can throw at us.

Yes, an ablation could help with issues unrelated to the endometriosis. It would depend on what is causing your pain and if bleeding is an issue. I definitely think alternatives and less invasive options should be considered before a hysterectomy!

Have you had a second opinion about what might be best for you?

Re: Has anyone tried ablation for endo period pain?

I have endometriosis and had an ablation one year ago. I too wanted to be conservative and not have a hysterectomy. I did not find that the ablation did much form my endometriosis or pain. I ended up having a hysterectomy and ovaries removed 5 weeks ago because the endometriosis was everywhere and I was bleeding again. I did not have much luck with the ablation. I hope you have better luck.

Unfortunately, I had a pretty much identical experience. Lapo and ablation in 2009. Heading in to do a hyster and removal of left ovary later this summer. Keeping the right ovary to avoid HRT.

Re: Has anyone tried ablation for endo period pain?

I had the ablation done four years ago. Didn't get a period after that. But in the last year, started having cramping. Upon changing doctors, she wanted to do a ultrasound just to see what's what. To our suprise, large fribroids, endo and a mysterious groth. After more ultrasounds, MRI and tests still unknown. It wasn't until my surgery 6/6 that the unknown was leftover blood from the ablation. Total lap Hist and don't have to worry about that anymore. So far so good, feeling pretty good. A few hot flashes, little headache, but overall good. Thank God!!

Re: Has anyone tried ablation for endo period pain?

I had an ablation almost 2 years ago. For the first 8 months it was great!! No periods, no cramping...then slowly but surely I started to feel pain again and low and behold the bleeding started again. According to my GYN the younger you are when you have the ablation, the more likely the lining will grow back and so will the endo. I have my TVH-BSO on the 27th. We tried everything, but the problem has only gotten worse.

Do what you can to get information before making a decision. I am not thrilled about surgical menopause, but I really wish I would have skipped the ablation and gotten the hyst out of the way.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I too wanted to do everything before my RALH... I had an ablation and that only lasted a few months~ then it all started like it had before the ablation; bleeding for months, pain, etc... I finally got a RALH and have never felt better!
