Re: Scared,Worried,Nervous!!

Hi there,

I'm so sorry to read what you are going through. I was pretty nervous and scared before my surgery. I spoke to my doc about my fears and he totally put them to rest. I don't feel different or empty after my surgery. I don't know if other women have had those feelings. Why do you think you will feel different or empty? Do you think you might not be ready for the surgery at this time? Do you have to have it now? Can it be postponed?

I'm praying for you.

Hugs,
Suzy

Re: Scared,Worried,Nervous!!

I thought I was going to feel a physical emptiness because I didn't have a uterus, but that's not the case. I don't feel any different than before the surgery. Not even a bit. I truly believe that you won't feel the emptiness or different. It's normal to be afraid. It's major surgery. I just got done reading a few posts where women had their one year anniversary. They were so happy they had the surgery and felt great. I still have soreness, but I am working a little too hard physically. Yard work is demanding. I'm almost done and will take it easy for the next several months.

Just think positive thoughts. You won't feel empty or different. After the surgery you will be so glad that you did it. Don't forget to read some articles and posts on how to prepare for surgery. Two things I wish I had immediately after surgery: Prune juice and Gas-X!

You're going to be just great! God bless!

Big hug,
Suzy

Re: Scared,Worried,Nervous!!

I was nervous, and scared before my surgery too. I was worried that I'd feel different to my husband when we were intimate. I'm only 3 weeks out from my surgery so I don't have the all clear for the intimacy yet, but physically I am feeling really good. I feel more alert if that makes any sense. Before my surgery, I had more bad days than good days. I felt like I lived the last year and a half in a fog. By that, I was always exhausted, I had headaches a lot, and just didn't feel "right". Then for a week each month I was in severe pain where I was taking 800 mg ibuprofen and vicodin to get through my period. This weekend will be my first "missed" period, and I can't tell you how wonderful I feel. I feel better with each passing day. Hang in there. You are not alone. You've got all your "Sisters" to help you out!

Re: Scared,Worried,Nervous!!

I am going in Tuesday too. I guess I worked most of my fears out earlier in the wait. Im feeling ready now. Just overwhelmed. So much for me to get done in 3 days! I went tonight and got new Pjs, panties, bra, socks, gas X, groceries for the first week or so, items for my clear diet Monday, and all my bowel prep items and post op prescriptions. Ive got all my castle prep stuff sitting on the counter and I stepped back and thought Oh Jesus, my time is nearly here, and Ive got a million things to do! Im not gonna have any time to worry at this point Good luck to you!

Re: Scared,Worried,Nervous!!

Oh sweetie I am sending huge cyber hugs!!! I had those same feelings and that is totally normal. Even though everyones reasons are different for having the surgery it is still hard. Some of us are so happy about the surgery they are relieved to have it finally come, others like me knew it was the right choice but were sad that it had to come to it. There is no wrong or right way to feel, it is an emotional thing to go through but I want to tell you what I was told before surgery: you are a women with or without your uterus, no surgery will ever take that away. I also was afraid that I was going to feel empty inside. The only thing I feel is the great relief I get from not being really bloated. My energy level is greater even though I am still recovering, I feel more alive. I am praying for you, please don't hesitate to post anytime for any reason, someone will be up and can talk you through your feelings

Re: Scared,Worried,Nervous!!

Big hugs to you Kristen! It's totally normal to be scared before your sugery and to worry you might feel different.

If it helps any, I'm 11 days post-op now and I feel almost back to normal! I don't feel empty or anything. (But I'm 50 and past the time of reproduction, so I don't have any emotional sadness about losing my equipment...is that partly why you are sad honey? It's okay if you don't want to talk about it but I wanted to let you know we are here if you do want to talk about that.)

The uterus is actually only about the size of a plum, I read. (Unless it has big fibroids or something.) I was so shocked to read that because I had such awful periods most all of my life, getting heavier after I turned 40, and the cramps were so awful it felt worse than when I was passing kidney stones. I mean such bad cramps that without motrin I felt like I was going to pass out. I guess I just figured that any part of me that caused that much pain must be HUGE, LOL.

At 11 days post-op, I can tell you I am very pleased with my decision to have this done. The doctor found adenomyosis which was the reason I was having such bad periods, and extensive endometriosis (another reason for the pain) and he said for my particular condition, hysterectomy was the only way to treat it. I just wish I had had the surgery a decade ago when things started getting even worse for me!

You'll do just fine! Everything will be okay, it's not nearly as bad as you imagine it will be! Nowhere near! The worst part is the part you are doing right now - the waiting and worrying! Don't be scared! (Easier said than done, I know.)

I second the recommendation for gas-x and either prune juice, apple juice, or pear juice (or some combination thereabouts.)

And make sure you get up and walk as soon as they tell you to, because walking helps get rid of the gas pains that are actually the worst part of the pains the first couple of days. I felt SOOOO much better after I went for a walk that first day! And I was so scared to move, to get out of the bed and walk but it truly wasn't bad at all! I thought for sure it would hurt a whole lot but it really didn't so much.

To be honest the pain I felt with this surgery never got anywhere near as bad as the pain I got with each period.

(((HUGS))) Everything will be okay!
