17 year old hysterectomy?

Is It possible for a seventeen year old female to get a hysterectomy? I've wanted one ever since I could remember.
I've already decided I don't want kids.
My reasoning for the surgery Is because I have abnormal bleeding.

Re: 17 year old hysterectomy?

Possible? Yes. But, I would try every other avenue before going the surgical route.

First, your body is still growing and a lot of things can change. Second, you say you don't want kids now but 17 is too young to make that call. Heck, I was in college and still thought I didn't want any kids and here I am with 5 kids and the desire to have had more!

You should talk to your parents about your concerns and then make an appt with a gynecologist. You will need the dr to figure out if your bleeding is abnormal and why. Then, your dr can help guide you and your parents in deciding the appropriate treatment.

Hugs and good luck!

Re: 17 year old hysterectomy?

I agree with ParrotCrazy, 17 is very young to be considering this and your body is still growing. Your best plan is to talk to your OB/GYN. I'm not saying it is too young though, since it was something my GYN brought up with me a 19, 13 years ago. I wasn't ready and wanted to try and have children. I never did.

I know there are tests your doctor will want to do first because of your age this is something they are not going to want to jump in too quickly on. There is many things they can do to try and control the bleeding and they do work. Just not for everyone.

Have you had a Hystorscopy/LAP/DNC yet? Have you been on any hormones like the pill, or shot? These are all things they will want to try first.

I wish you luck in finding what is best for you. Age will play a factor in the type of care you get, but you and your doctor will find what is best for you.

Re: 17 year old hysterectomy?

I totally agree with the previous replies....it is possible, but you really should try every other alternative first.

One thing to remember, surgical menopause at a young age can cause a lot of other health concerns. I was 30 when I had my hysterectomy and I have to take many precautions to prevent things such as blood clots, heart attack, stroke, and osteoporosis just to name a few...and all due to surgical menopause at my age.

I think you definitely need to speak with your OB/GYN about what is causing your abnormal bleeding. It is completely possible that there is some sort of simple solution to help you out without the finality of a hysterectomy at such a young age.

I wish you the best of luck in finding out what is going on and beg you, please, please, please talk to your parents and your doctor about this!

Re: 17 year old hysterectomy?

As the others have said, a hysterectomy is possible at 17 but without a life or death situation it is highly unlikely any doctor would perform one or that an insurance company would approve it. There are too many risks for one, and too many future issues for someone your age.

Abnormal bleeding can actually be very, very common for 17 year olds and there are multiple less invasive treatment options to consider.

My periods were always long and heavy which is one reason I chose to start using birth control before I even turned 17. I was put on combination pill and it did help a lot.

We change so much and in so many ways as we age and mature. At 17, we are not who we were at 12. At 35 we are not who we were in our teens. Some changes can only occur with time and life experiences and those changes can affect our fertility desires. I didn't want children at your age either. Now, I am very grateful for the two I have and hurt because my hysterectomy took away my opportunity to have more.

But there is more to a hysterectomy than fertility concerns and stopping bleeding issues. The side effects for this surgery are extensive and those who experience them can regret the surgery with ever fiber of their being. A hysterectomy can open the door to new health concerns that can be worse than the issues that led to the surgery. It is a major, irreversible surgery that should be a last resort for any woman regardless of her age.

I would encourage you to sit down with your OB/GYN and discuss how you are being affected by your periods and ask what your options are. You should also talk to your mom or guardian. If you are having issues with your period, it is likely other women in your family have as well and they can share what they have done to manage their symptoms.

I wish you all the best and hope you will take some time to learn about your options and work with your doctor to determine what is causing your abnormal bleeding. You are not alone and not only will we answer questions and try to help, you may also have friends, classmates, neighbors, etc. who have had issues and who would be willing to help if they only knew you needed it. Some times someone simply has to open the door to the discussion as most of us don't go around advertising how we are affected by our periods! Not the best dinner conversation!

Re: 17 year old hysterectomy?

I can't think of a doctor that would do it at your age unless the bleeding and amount of bleeding was life-threatening.
I would take steps to see what the exact problem is and repair it, rather than remove your uterus.
You may change your mind later.

Re: 17 year old hysterectomy?

Hi,
I just wanted to say that I agree with what the other women have said. 17 seems to be very young to have a hysterectomy. I am 29 and that is considered fairly young to be facing this surgery. I would explore all other options first, especially since the likelyhood that any doctor would preform this surgery without life threatening bleeeding is very unlikely. There are things that can be done to lessen the bleeding, such as birth control, or other proceedures. I hope that you are able to find some possitive solutions by talking with your ob/gyn.

Re: 17 year old hysterectomy?

Agreeing with the others. This is a huge surgery, and to be considering it at 17 is really really young. I would encourage you to consult with an OB/GYN for things that could help with bleeding before even considering this type of surgery. I would never consider letting my daughter have this surgery at 17 unless it was a truly life threatening situation.

Re: 17 year old hysterectomy?

Please reconsider and fight to keep your uterus and ovaries.

You may meet someone that will be your husband someday and he may want children and you may change your mindset and agree to have a child first. Anything in life is possible!

At every different decade in life, your ideas and thoughts about things change. Mine did.

Allow yourself the opportunity to grow. In order to do this, keeping your uterus may give your options about whether or not to have a child or two. I urge you to think about this.

Good Luck.
