Have really tall bed -should I get a hospital bed? Abd surgery

Hi all,
I have one of those really high beds... Like w 12inch matresses n box springs on normal height rails.....I'm having open abdominal surgery n wondering if I'll be able to get in and out of bed. I have a foot stool but maybe that's not wise since I also have vertigo. Would you all suggest renting a hospital bed?
Thanks!

Good morning!

Do you have a comfy couch or even a recliner you can camp out on the first few weeks? After the first 2 weeks or so I would think you will be able to get in and out of your regular bed ok. Renting a hospital bed sounds like a lot of work and expense!

Re: Have really tall bed -should I get a hospital bed? Abd surgery

I know it's not the same surgery, but we had a really high bed with my planned c-section. We moved the box springs into the garage (temporarily) to make the bed a reasonable height for me. Hubby put a couple sheets of plywood under the mattress to help support it. Might be easier than renting a bed, unless you want to camp out on sofa.

Very uncomfortable futon sofa n no recliner-can't move box springs-king bed n hubby has had 5 back surgeries. Actually I rented hubby a hospital bed for his back fusion sugary n w doc prescription for it it was not expensive- they delivered it set it up - n cane n took it away when we were done... Just didn't know if anyone else had tried this w a high bed or if it's a bad idea... Can ask doc thurs too.... Ty for your replies!!

Re: Have really tall bed -should I get a hospital bed? Abd surgery

Hi Sammer

It looks as though I had the same op as you're having and the one thing I wish I'd done before my surgery was practice the hospital recommended way of getting in and out of bed after abdominal surgery.

The technique took me a while to get used to and the first time I tried it in the hospital, my hand slipped as it was pushing me up and I ended up like a beetle on its back. I had a very small area on my scar that was bleeding after that and I don't know for sure if I caused it by 'falling' into bed but it wouldn't have helped matters.

If you think you may be keeping your own bed, I would recommend you practice the movements and do them really slowly so that you get used to how it is going to feel.

Sending lots of good wishes and hugs your way

Re: Have really tall bed -should I get a hospital bed? Abd surgery

Thanks again Mrs. B.....I helped my DH with the "barrel roll" technique for his back surgery - I think that is what it is for this too....I will practice as you suggested...that is a good idea thank you....
I have a walker from his surgery I was thinking of placing beside my bed for stablization - our kitchen chairs are more likely to tip...but not sure if that's a good idea or not either....but maybe the practicing with and without it might help...Thanks so much!
Best wishes!

I have a step stool, but it also has a handle. The stool folds up into the handle when it's not in use. Something like this could help and give you stability when using it. I got it at Target and it wasn't expensive. I didn't use it post op, but I think it would work.

Re: Have really tall bed -should I get a hospital bed? Abd surgery

My bed is also really tall. I have a step stool to get onto the bed. I put my back towards the bed and step to the side to get on the stool then I just have to sit and I am on the bed. The stool is touching my bed and nightstand so there is no way it can move when I am getting on it.
