Silly "?" about cars

We have several cars. I am wondering for those who have had their surgery was it easy getting into your car and what was the height?

I have a very low to the ground car, A suburban but no side rails, and a very tall SUV but it has side rails.

What do you think would be the easiest when leaving the hospital?

I am having DaVinci in 2 days...

Re: Silly "?" about cars

Hi there . . . I had an LSH about 4.5 weeks ago. I found it easiest to get in and out of my Tahoe (it has running boards but I never use them) than my car post-operatively. My reasoning was that the car is so low, I'd have to use my ab muscles more to lower myself into it and pull myself back up out of it. Where in the Tahoe, I did have to 'climb' into it (it doesn't have a lift kit so probably the same height as your Suburban) but it wasn't that bad, I was able to do so with my arms and legs. And then I could kind of 'fall' out of it. Not literally fall, just drop my legs over and use my arms to slowly let myself down.

Hope this makes sense and I hope it helps!! I would vote for the Suburban!

Re: Silly "?" about cars

for me no suv. My husband has one and still hard to get in...but I am also short. only four foot elevn and a half.
I would take whatever one is easy to get into and which one is smooth riding.
Good luck

Re: Silly "?" about cars

I have an Intrepid, low to the ground, I sat on a pillow and put a pillow on my stomach and put the seatbelt over the pillow.

I had a bladder suspension, so I had a couple of laproscope incisions, the pillows helped a lot, I have strong arms so I just lowered my self in with my arms, didn't use my ab muscles at all.

Best wishes!!!

Re: Silly "?" about cars

I had dvH last week. We have a sedan (low) and a Jeep (high). I found it was easier to climb in and out of the jeep, rather than bending for the sedan. However even more so, have a pillow for your belly. That helped. I also felt every single bump in the road, which would happen no matter what I was in. And I swear, the bumpiest roads seemed to be right outside the hospital, lol! My poor DH, I felt bad for him he was apologizing so much! Lol!

Silly "?" about cars

Choose the car that comes closest to stepping directly in with the least lowering or twisting. I would choose one of the two higher SUV types and practice getting in without using your abdominal muscles or twisting. I'm guessing you'll have a driver, so the side rail issue may be less of an issue. You can also buy assistive devices that hook into the car frame that you can use as a rail, then unhook and store in the glove compartment. I have a low car and it was definitely a challenge!
