I workout 3-5 hours a day EVERYDAY
Is there anyone out there like me? I work out from 4 am until 7 am 7 days a week and have been for 22 years. If I am not working out at 110% with a sweat pooling on my skin I feel like I might as well go home and sit on the couch and eat a donut. I teach Yoga and SPIN on top of my own personal workout. It is not unusual for me to workout 5 hours in one day. Am I crazy to have this surgery? Please respond if you are an avid workout person and if you did/didnt get completely out of shape during recovery AND/OR you CAN/CAN'T continue to workout like this post-op.
PLease don't tell me to relax about it, that is not going to happen.

Re: I workout 3-5 hours a day EVERYDAY
Hi mlach
I'm about 11 months post op LSH. Before the surgery I was working out every day about two hours but it only caused me more pain, and had to stop. I also was like you pool of sweat, so I understand. At this point I have not been able to return to my previous workouts, but I have always been a slow healer. I may not be as toned as I was, but I have not gained at all actually I lost 10 lb right after surgery.
I have my tredmill here at home and still use it but not like before.
I hope once my healing is complete I can return to my workouts, I really enjoy them.
P.S.
At the begining after my surgery I did work out like I did previously which caused me pain. I chose to not workout because I had a hard time going slow.
I hope this does not discourage you, because we are all different. This is just my experiance.
Good luck with your surgery and please once you are post op listen to your body and allow it to heal.
Hugs

Re: I workout 3-5 hours a day EVERYDAY
What you have to say to you self is " why I am I having the surgery"? What are you hoping to achieve, will your health improve or can you ride what ever your reason for having the surgery out?
I bleed for 8 months 24/7 sometimes as much as 100ml in 4/5 hrs, subsequently became anemic, and it really was killing me- I am a sculptor living on average, rode 50 Kim's a week walked swam and did aquarobics, yoga and generally was out from dawn to dusk
Yes, it will all have to stop, but you are potentially talking a few months before you can slowly get back into it, I have been told I won't be lifting a bale of hay for at least 10 weeks but, seriously I have the rest of my life to do that so I empathize with your concerns but do ask yourself that questions.
Long before I heard of the phrase " recovering princess on this website we have long used the saying " suck it up princess" and I say this to myself on an several times a day and mean no offense it always makes me laugh and kicks me up the bum to get on with what I can do and not worry about what I can't
Good luck

I workout 3-5 hours a day EVERYDAY
I'm 49 TAH-BSO on 11/16/11. I began walking the hallway on day 2. 5minutes once a day... then twice a day...ten minutes, 15 etc. On day 7 I went outdoors very slowly and continued to add minutes and "speed". By day 14 (yesterday) I was walking 45 minutes. Plus my exercise bike evenings 40min. So today (day 15) I went to the gym and walked treadmill at slow pace and 1.5 incline 50minutes. I plan to walk one hour by Sunday at 2.0 incline. Its doable. The exercise bike is uncomfortable b/c large incision. But I hold the edges of my incision with my fingers to keep biking. I only took Ibuprofen or tylenol since I left the hospital. I've endured pain and extreme fatigue but I think I can manage by eating healthy and continue my workouts. Can't wait to go back to my old routine of weight training twice a week and intense cardio 3X week. I plan to wait till week 8 or 9 to get there. But I need to condition for now b/c I've never felt this tired and 'slow'. This has been quite a journey for me. Just trying to improve 5minutes each day... its very frustrating. Good luck and speedy recovery to all.

Re: I workout 3-5 hours a day EVERYDAY
Oh I am so pleased to find other people have this question too.
I was working out 3-5 days a week, doing strength and cardio. I can squat 12 reps at 160 pounds and deadlift 8 reps at 150 pounds. My leg extensions were at 230 pounds for 8 reps. I miss it... I got my fitness and strength up to help recovery, but then I discovered that I really really liked it. I expected to lose fitness and muscle during recovery and I've made enquiries about getting my testosterone levels checked and using a patch so i can get back to building muscle when I'm ready (my ovaries were removed).
Here's my question. I am still getting vaginal bleeding and I'm at week 4. I'm told this is normal and that it is "better out than in". I've also been told that I will see it more as I become more active. I've been very careful with lifting, to make sure that I do it with biceps only, elbow pinned to my side and not engage my core, so I don't think lifting has been an issue. My problem is general activity. I went for a walk 10 hours post-op and was fine. Weeks 1-3, I took taxis into town and walked around for 1-2 hours, then took a taxi back. For the last week, I've been going to the gym and hopping on the treadmill about once every 3 days to do a stately shuffle (2.5 mph) for 30-45 minutes or so and I'm now up to a 5% incline (my norm is 5mph walk for 75 minutes on a 15% incline, so I am *behaving*!). My idea was that it was better to do the treadmill than going for a walk somewhere and getting stuck with no way to get back to the car/house when I got tired. Also, the fitness trainers at the gym are first aid certified, so I thought if things went pear-shaped, I'd have plenty of people around to help me. Anyway, I bleed more after I've been active. I expected this, because I was told that it would happen, but I don't know WHY it happens. Does anybody know whether it is because more of the blood that's in there comes out when I move around or if it is because moving around causes new bleeding?
I just don't know how to judge this. All the advice says to keep moving for fitness and to avoid thrombosis and they say after a couple of weeks that you should be able to walk for about an hour at a slow pace without problems, but I don't want to make things bleed just by doing this and I don't want to slow my recovery down. On the other hand, it's just a very gentle walk for Pete's sake. And I feel pretty good, otherwise...I don't feel like I've overexerted myself or anything, although my tummy does swell a bit after I've been in town or for a walk or anything else that might be called 'activity'.
Advice would be gratefully received. Especially from fellow gym rats

Hey mlach....I just noticed your date was 19 December 2011. Do you feel up to telling us how are you doing? You're two weeks after me, so I'm hoping to get an idea about how someone else in similar circumstances will get on with the recovery period. Sending you all best wishes!!

I workout 3-5 hours a day EVERYDAY
Update: last time I posted here I was 2 weeks post TAH-BSO. I've continued my treadmill walks and now I'm 7and half weeks post op. I walk treadmill 5miles in 75min most days of the week. My Dr ok'd me to start strength training now. I went yesterday and I did ok. I kept the weight lower than my usual and I did 3 sets instead of 4. Also 12 reps instead of 18, etc. I did well with this plan. My workout was about 45 min , instead of 90 min. But I felt comfortable.
I have not had any bleeding or spotting at all since surgery. Not even the day of surgery
Not one drop of blood. My treadmill walk is at 4mph which is not at all slow for me (I'm only 5'3"), and my bike workouts make me sweat, but I have not spotted at all. My seven week checkup this week my Dr said I shouldn't expect any blood EVER bc I never spotted and now my cuff is 100% healed and closed.
I plan to start running next week (will be 8 weeks on Wed). I think I'll do a C25K bc I haven't run in 2 months. We'll see.
