Re: Hysterectomy or Uterus removed

Ulutse,

I'm so sorry you've received this diagnosis. The short answer is YES endometrial cancer can be treated. I had a different type of cancer, so I'll defer those specifics to ladies with that diagnosis. I'm sure someone will be along soon.

Of course you're scared, sweetie, that's perfectly normal. You will feel "better" once you get a treatment plan in place and start getting rid of this beast. Have you been referred to a gyn/onc (gynecological oncologist)? They are the experts for gyn cancer/pre-cancer, and we recommend them in these cases. Besides, it's always a good idea to get a second opinion.

Take some deep breaths. There are lots of ladies here who beat cancer. And if we did, so can you!

Re: Hysterectomy or Uterus removed

Endometrial cancer is one of the most treatable cancers since it is usually confined to the uterus. When I was diagnosed, I was told that I would most likely just need the hysterectomy and ovaries removed and no further treatment would be needed. That is what happens in most cases. Did you have a biopsy?

Hang in there, you will get through this.

Re: Hysterectomy or Uterus removed

Sweetie,

As others already say, endometrial cancer- which I had - very often occurs in the early stages and thus is very treatable and often by the surgery alone. Nonetheless hearing a cancer dx is terrifying and so I believe I know where you may be mentally, emotionally now. Cancer puts us all on an emotional rollarcoaster, it can help to learn more about this particular disease and see others have recovered. It also can help one feel a bit better once you get the definitive dx and most importantly a plan to rid yourself of the disease.

As other note, pls if at all feasible do consider seeing a gyn/onc as they are cancer experts, and of course use them for your surgery too. Do not hesitate to ask any questions; there are many who have been on the road you just are beginning and will respond as best they can. We are all here for you so hang in there.

Re: Hysterectomy or Uterus removed

Hi there
I have had endometrial cancer, had my surgery almost 3 years ago, and even though my cancer had spread, I have no evidence of cancer.
It is very treatable, are you booked for surgery soon?

Re: Hysterectomy or Uterus removed

The first few months after my diagnosis were an emotional roller coaster but I got through it and so will you. You can ask anything here - there's no such thing as a dumb question and there's nothing to be embarrassed about (sometimes it's hard to talk about those intimate parts of our bodies).

Re: Hysterectomy or Uterus removed

I had endometrial cancer as well. I was diagnosed, sent to an gyn/onc and within two weeks I was cancer free. I am still on an emotional roller coaster, but I get better every week. There are so many worries that go along with a cancer diagnosis so talk to your doctor and I recommend taking someone with you to all of your appointments because if you are like me you will be shell shocked and forget your questions. I have learned so much on this web site and most of my questions were answered here. I sure hope all goes well with you Ulutse!

Re: Hysterectomy or Uterus removed

I would like to say Thank You all for answering my questions, im so glad i found thsi site and its easier knowing im not alone im my fight and deafeat of cancer ( as i do intend to give cancer a nasty fight it cant win Im winning NOT CANCER!! ) After reading that this cancer is very treatable i feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, even though i still worry i feel so much better having talked with all of you. I do have an apt with a gyn/onc this Friday. My other question is should i insist that they do a complete hysterectomy seeing im not planning on having kids ? I fear if they dont do a complete hysterectomy the cancer could spread to ovaries and beyond. Youve all been a huge help calming my nerves. I dont have a date set for surgery yet but will keep you sisters posted, also ill keep everyone posted after surgery as well. Thanks so much im going to beat this cancer, i know staying positive is going to go alog way to beating cancer praying and relying on my faith is helping tremendously also.

Re: Hysterectomy or Uterus removed

Hi Ulutse,

Endo cancer survivor of 1 1/2 years speaking...the most terrifying words of my life to date were: "you have cancer" but as the other ladies have said, if caught early the survival rate is excellent and I did not need any additional chemo or radiation. Not to minimize anything...it was a horrible journey but life does go on and I have done some great things in the past year or so, including raising tons of money for gyno cancer research! Don't hesitate to ask us if you have any specific questions...and please keep us posted.

Re: Hysterectomy or Uterus removed

Ulutse, I would be really surprised if gyn-onc doesn't suggest full hysterectomy or at least list it as one of the options, but I'm not a doc and I don't know all the details of your case. If you're pre-menopausal, it's important to discuss pros and cons of keeping ovaries. With endo ca, sometimes they don't want to do HRT but they do want to take ovaries because estrogen encourages some forms of it to grow.

Make a list of questions you want to ask and take it with you. Write down what gyn-onc says - or ask a friend or family member to take notes for you. It's hard to remember things when you're scared and stressed out.
