TAH for heavy vaginal bleeding

I am glad I found this site. Three days before Christmas, my doctor told me I needed to have surgery. I'd had a D & C, for heavy vaginal bleeding, right before Thanksgiving for a uterine polyp. Dr told me that would fix things right up. A month later, the heavy bleeding is back. he has me on two birth control pills a day, to control the bleeding. Its down to some brown spotting at this point. Any others out there, having surgery for heavy bleeding?. Dr did not mention anything about fibroids. Said the path report from the D & C showed all negative cells. of course, I still worry what they might find in the ovaries. My maternal grandmother died of ovarian cancer. That was way back in the late 30's. I'd be glad to hear of others who are having surgery for vaginal bleeding. My surgery is Jan 7. I didn't qualify for a vaginal hysterectomy due to my uterus "not sagging" and being 'well supported" in its location. I'm nearly 52 and have been through menopause.

TAH for heavy vaginal bleeding

Radtech

Hi! Glad you found this site. I found it 2 weeks pre op and it has just been the best and all the ladies are wonderful.

I had surgery due to fibroids and enlarged uterus. I know where you are coming from with the heavy vaginal bleeding. I put up with it for approx 4 years before I finally went to the doctor and got it checked out. I just thought it was part of being female - boy was I wrong. I honestly thought I was imagining it all. I was also really really glad that it was TAH (due to uterus) as when I was opened up, the doctor found a mass on one of the fibroids. It turned out to be a degenerating fibroid.

I am now 18 days post op and it has all been good. My parnter reminded me this morning my periods would have been due next Sunday. Gee I'm going to miss them - NOT!!!!

Regards and best wishes for your surgery and recovery.

TAH for heavy vaginal bleeding

Buckie, I don't know how you put up with the heavy bleeding for 4 yrs. This last bout with the heavy bleeding, started on Thurs morning, I went to the doctor Friday afternoon and my blood pressure was 104 over 40! I felt light headed and the nurse said I was white as a sheet. If he hadn't put me on the birth control pills to slow down/stop the bleeding, I don't think I would have been able to function, till m y surgery on jan 7. I'd hate to see what my hemoglobin and hematocrit are.

Hi, Dianne! Are you taking iron supplements now? It sounds like you are very low if you're getting light-headed and pale! Lots of ladies here have had very heavy bleeding, and no permanent improvement with hormone treatment or D&C. It probably will be the best thing to have the uterus out and get back on the road to health! With your family history of ovarian cancer, are you having your ovaries removed also? I think that would be wise. After your surgery, you can request a copy of your pathology report and read all about what was causing your bleeding: could be fibroids growing in the lining of the uterus, polyps, endometriosis, etc. It's a positive sign that the D&C report came back benign. Hugs and best wishes to you!
