When is post op urine retention abnormal?

I'm just wondering at what point is urine retention considered abnormal after having a TVH with anterior and posterior repair using a patient's own fascia?

Re: When is post op urine retention abnormal?

Are you able to urinate at all or is it just the feeling that your bladder is always full? It's not uncommon to develope a urinary tract infection following surgery.

I suggest you call your Dr and get their advise. They may want to see you to rule out infection or any other problems.

Keep us updated as to how you are doing,

Tracy

Re: When is post op urine retention abnormal?

I was unable to urinate at all while in the hospital so I came home with a cath. I found out 6 days later that I had a UTI and was still unable to urinate. At 2 weeks post op, I was able to urinate a few drops. Now I'm 15 days post op, over the UTI, but haven't attempted again to urinate. I am clamping my cath for up to 3 hrs at a time in order to get my bladder back in shape and am planning on trying again soon to go on my own. I'm just really worried about it! This has been my only problem post op. Thanks for your reply!

Re: When is post op urine retention abnormal?

I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. I would be concerned as well. I suggest you talk to your Dr. again and see what is in the realm of normal and how long he or she thinks this will take. I wish I had more advise for you. Hopefully someone that has gone through this will come along and guide you further.

Please keep us posted on how you are doing.

Sending hugs,
Tracy

Re: When is post op urine retention abnormal?

I have kept in close contact with my doctor and he hasn't seemed concerned that there is a problem. I feel as though it is slowly resolving itself. Thanks for your help! If anyone has any related experience with this, I'd love to hear about it. TIA!

Re: When is post op urine retention abnormal?

Yes I am 8 weeks post op now and have no retentions problems. I was finally able to pee on my own at 3 weeks. Before surgery, my uterus had prolapsed onto my bladder and my urethra was pulled upwards. This caused me to only be able to pee small amounts at a time and I felt like I had to pee almost 24/7. So this surgery caused alot of trauma to this area and I had a great deal of swelling. I stopped the narcotics on day 6 post op since they cause urine retention and took around 1600 mg of Ibuprofen daily in order to reduce swelling. I used a heating pad and those little frozen gel packs also which helped. Plus I drank as much water as possible. I was freaked out also but thankfullly my doctor was patient and didn't start sending me to specialists which would have only cost me more medical bills and PAIN. After having a catheter for 3 weeks, I was SO anxious and worried about peeing on my own that I also took a valium just to help relax the day that I had it removed. I was slowly able to pee on my own and it came back little by little. During the first week, I was going to the bathroom VERY frequently but that was because the bladder becomes lazy when catheterized for extented periods and must be retrained. Now 8 weeks later, I still have some slight urethral irritation if I don't drink enough water. But I am peeing SO good now, just like I did when I was a kid and I couldn't be happier!

Re: When is post op urine retention abnormal?

oh that is WONDERFUL to hear! You just made my day hopefully I will be on that road soon. I'm 18 days post surgery... they will pull it again monday. I did take a xanax last time before I tried to pee. Didn't help me pee but helped when they had to cath me again!
